Don, who graduated in 1956, was a four-year letterman in basketball. He played guard on the back-to-back Ohio Athletic Conference championship teams of 1953-1954 and 1954-1955. Team captain during his senior year, he was also chosen All-OAC second team that season.

He secured his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin after graduating and began teaching and coaching in the state of Virginia. In time he became one of the state's outstanding high school coaches, establishing a record by winning over 500 games.
