Debora Lazorik started at Marietta College in the Fall of 1980 as the head volleyball coach. She would also take over as head women’s basketball coach that same year. Lazorik coached volleyball for seven seasons winning 118 matches. In her final three seasons, the Pioneers won 20, 26 and 28 matches, respectively and lost in the OAC championship match in 1985. The only time Marietta has played in the volleyball tournament final.
On the hardwood, Lazorik coached for 11 seasons from 1980-81 through 1990-91. She was forced out of “retirement” for the 1995-96 season when a late coaching departure left the Pioneers without a coach. Lazorik is Marietta’s all-time leader in wins with 131. Her 1989-90 team went 20-7 and featured All-American Cathy Clark, the OAC’s career scoring leader with 2,311 points.
Lazorik took over as Marietta’s Director of Athletics in the Fall of 1989 and held the position through the 2006-07 school year. Under her direction, Marietta College enjoyed unprecedented growth in athletic facilities and in the number of varsity sports offered.
Starting with the Athletic Founders Board that completed the McCoy Athletic Facility and Pioneer Park Project and then continuing with the construction of the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center, Beren Tennis Center, new soccer and softball fields and the installation of the current all-weather track and FieldTurf at Don Drumm Stadium, Lazorik has contributed greatly to Marietta’s first-class athletic facilities.
For her years of relentless support of Marietta College, Lazorik was awarded the MCAA Service Award in 2001. In her career, she has served on a number of NCAA and OAC committees including serving as the chair of the Division III Women’s Rowing National Committee as well as founding the OAC Professional Development Committee.
