Nystrom, of McLain, Virginia, was a four-time Dad Vail medalist on the Marietta College men’s crew under head coach Ralph Lindamood.
As a freshman he rowed stroke seat of the boat that won gold at the Dad Vail Championships. In his sophomore year, he moved from stroke to bow seat. That crew won bronze at the Dad Vails in 1965. Nystrom also rowed on the 1966 and 1967 crews that won the Dad Vail Championships. In the three seasons that Nystrom won gold at the Dad Vails, the Marietta crews also went undefeated.
After graduating from Marietta, Nystrom went to the University of Rhode Island to earn his master’s degree in Geography and Cartography. While at URI, he also served as the head men’s crew coach, and under his coaching they enjoyed their first winning season. Nystrom completed his master’s degree in one year and then went on to become a Navy pilot. An accident, however, would cut his career as a pilot short.
Nystrom has since enjoyed a successful career in government. He recently retired from the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C. where he served as a Senior Information Technology Advisor.
Nystrom has four children, Karen, Jon, Peter and Bryan.
