Chad Coning, a four-year letterman, was a member of the football team from 1993-96. He began his career as a defensive end before switching over to right guard on the offensive line for the final game of his freshman season. Coning remained in the position for the rest of his career and helped lead the blocking schemes for a pair of Hall of Fame running backs—Curt Weikart ‘96 (Class of 2007) and Dante Brown ‘98 (Class of 2009). Running behind Coning, Weikart led the OAC in rushing in 1994 and again in 1995 when the Pioneers finished with an 8-1-1 record and a top-10 ranking in the final national poll. In 1996, Brown ran for a NCAA all divisions record 441 yards against Baldwin-Wallace as Marietta produced the league’s top rusher for a third straight season. Coning, who earned All-OAC first team honors in each of his final three years, also received All-North Region first team and All-America second team honors as senior captain. Following the season, Coning also captained his All-Star team at the National Classic. In 2000, Coning was inducted into the Marietta Football Wall of Fame.

Coning, a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1997. He has worked internationally and is currently a Drilling Engineer for Chevron in Perth, Australia. He lives in Australia with his wife Amy Lynn (Marshall) ’97 and their three children, Lynsie, Logan and Leila.
