A prolific three-sport letter winner, Ward was a member of the graduating class of 1926. He died in March 1983 at the age of 81. As a quarterback in football, he earned three letters, participating in his first three years. He coached the freshman football team as a senior. He was a four-year letterman in basketball (forward) and track (hurdles and pole vault). He captained the team in both of these sports. A member of the Varsity M Club, the Lower Salem, Ohio, native was vice president of the student body as a senior.

Following graduation, Ward served as a physical education instructor and freshman football coach until 1929, when he resigned to take a position with the Hope Natural Gas Company in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He was an outstanding football and basketball official and an official's instructor.
