Freshman Jack Gleim (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) stroked the Pioneers’ novice 8+ and novice 4+ shells that were victorious over Purdue University in the 59th annual Challenge Cup. In the novice 8+ race, Marietta finished in 5:34.00, just ahead of Purdue’s time of 5:35.32. The Pioneers sat coxswain Janelle Patterson (Misawa, Japan/Robert D. Edgren), Gleim at stroke, Pat Clary (Bellport, N.Y./St. Anthony's), Jon Hinson (Rocky River/Rocky River), Cameron Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), Matthew Bush (Williamstown, W.Va./Wood County Christian), Zach Pope (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg), Andrew Billingsley (Marietta/Marietta) and Michael Bowen (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) in the bow. In the novice 4+ race, the Pioneers crossed in 6:08.62, while the Boilermakers finished in 6:18.68. Patterson coxed the winning 4+ shell that included Gleim at stroke, Johnson, Bush and Clary in the bow.
