WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped a heart-breaker to host Wilmington College Tuesday (Oct. 23) evening. The Pioneers, who led most of the game, gave up a late goal to tie the game and then lost on an own goal in overtime.
The loss drops Marietta's record to 8-7-1 overall and 3-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington improves to 11-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the OAC.
Junior forward Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when she beat the keeper with a shot in the top left corner. It was her eighth goal of the season and 21st of her career, which is six shy of second place all-time.
The Quakers fought back with a goal from Nicky Fey in the 80th minute. Fey was able to head in a shot following an initial save by Marietta keeper Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley).
The game remained tied until the 93rd minute, when pressure from Wilmington's offense resulted in an own goal, giving the Quakers a 2-1 victory.
Wilmington out-shot Marietta 30-3 overall and 13-3 in shots on goal.
Hetzel made 11 saves in the loss, while Casey McKinneyhad two saves in the win.
Marietta's OAC Tournament hopes remain alive. The Pioneers will need either a win or a tie at John Carroll Friday (Oct. 26) afternoon to secure a spot in the eight-team playoff. That game is slated for 4 p.m.
