Women's soccer blanked by visiting Wooster 4-0
Lady Pioneers off until Sept. 15
Sept. 4, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team took the field for the third time in four days Tuesday (Sept. 4), as the College of Wooster visited Marietta Field for a non conference showdown. The Fighting Scots, also playing their third game in as many days, looked much fresher on the field and it translated into a 4-0 victory in their favor.
With the temperature hovering near 90 degrees, the referee actually implemented water breaks midway through each half. The pauses in play only deferred the offensive onslaught from Wooster (3-0), who out-shot Marietta (1-2) 20-5 in the victory. 14 of the Fighting Scots', while four of the Pioneers', shots were on goal.
Alice Bauman gave Wooster a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when she drilled a ball that was deflected by a Marietta defender over the head of goalkeeper Jenna Freeman (Bay Village) and into the back of the net.
Simone DiSalvo made it 2-0 in the 49th minute when she took a cross from teammate Laura Ayer and lofted a left-footed shot from inside the six into the upper left side of the goal.
Ayer, Wooster's leading scorer, converted her fourth goal of the young season when she beat a defender, forced Freeman to commit and then found an opening inside the left pipe in the 60th minute.
Emily Lea capped the scoring with five minutes to play. She found herself in the right place at the right time and chested a loose ball into the goal after the ball was bounced around by a couple of Marietta defenders.
Abby Brown, who made three saves in 66 minutes, and Alix Hoffman, who had one save in the final 23 minutes, combined on the shutout. Freeman made 10 saves during her 90 minutes in goal.
The Pioneers will have 11 days regroup before returning to action. Marietta will open play at the Penn State-Altoona Tournament on Saturday (Sept. 15) against Albright (Pa.) at 12 p.m. The Pioneers have won the four-team tournament in each of the last three seasons. Also competing at the tournament are Thiel (Pa.) and host Penn State-Altoona.
