Lady Pioneers route Lady Warriors, 7-2, to open 2007 Soccer Classic
Martinez scores two goals and moves into third place in career goals

Sept. 1, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — Junior Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) scored two goals in the first nine minutes to set the tone for a 7-2 Marietta College victory over visiting Rochester (Mich.) College in the first women's game of the 2007 Marietta College Soccer Classic Saturday (Sept. 1) at Marietta Field.

With the win, the Lady Pioneers (1-0) advance to Sunday (Sept. 2) afternoon's championship game at 1 p.m. against the winner of Saturday's 3 p.m. game between Juniata (Pa.) and SUNY-Brockport (N.Y.). The Lady Warriors (0-1) will play the loser in the consolation game at 9 a.m.

Martinez, who increased her career goal total to 15 in the win, which ties her for third place in Marietta College history, got the Pioneers on the board with an unassisted goal just 3:57 into the contest. She was able to drive a ball past Jennifer Stamevski, the Rochester goalkeeper, and into the back of the net.

Martinez put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 four minutes later when she took a pass from senior Marianne Siders(Belle, W.Va./Riverside) and shot it over the Stamveski's out-stretched hands and into the top left corner of the goal.

The Lady Warriors answered in the 10th minute, when Sarah Kirn scored off an assist from Katie O'Connell to make the score 2-1.

Siders gave Marietta another two goal lead with her first goal of the season in the 11th minute.

Junior Allie Williams (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) sent the Pioneers into the locker room with a 4-1 advantage after scoring a goal in the 14th minute. Senior Vanessa Nicholls (Cornwall, Ontario, Canada) earned the assist on the play.

Amanda Henderson accounted for Rochester's second and final goal in the 47th minute when she scored on a rebound after her first shot was blocked by Marietta sophomore Jenna Freeman.

Siders' second goal of the season, which came in the 52nd minute and was assisted by senior Kileen Lehman (Elyria/Elyria Catholic), increased Marietta's lead to 5-2.

Lehman also set up the next goal in the 57th minute, when her corner kick found Nicholls, who was in the box and drilled it into the back of the net.

Sophomore Christi Tims (Olmsted Falls) closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute. She was assisted by freshman Lauren Dellosa (Uniontown/Green).

Marietta out-shot Rochester 19-11, including 15-8 in shots on goal. The Pioneers' tied a school record with five assists in the game. The feat has now been accomplished five times, most recently against Bluffton College in 2005.

Freeman, who improved to 1-0, collected five saves in 44:51. Freshman Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley) finished the game in goal and made her first collegiate save on the only shot that she faced. Stamevski worked all 90 minutes and made eight saves.
