Late comeback dashes Marietta women's upset aspirations against Capital in soccer
Lady Pioneers fall 2-1 to the Crusaders
Oct. 17, 2006
MARIETTA, Ohio — An early lead in a hard fought 90 minute battle was not enough for the Marietta College women's soccer team as it dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to rival Capital University Tuesday (Oct. 17) afternoon at Marietta Field.
A goal on a header by junior Vanessa Nicholls (Cornwall, ONT, Canada) gave the Pioneers (6-5-5, 2-2-2 OAC) a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute. The score was set up when junior Colby Cardwell (Anchorage, AK/Robert Service) found Nicholls open in the box on a free kick.
Marietta held the lead through intermission and until the 68th minute. Capital (9-6-2, 4-0-2 OAC) tied the game on a corner kick. The kick bounced back and forth between defenders and the Crusader forwards before Molly Sheils shot the ball past the Marietta keeper for the game-tying goal and her third of the year.
The score remained tied 1-1 until the 88th minute, when a cross by Roucille Daza found the foot of Kara Martin, who flicked the ball into the upper right corner of the goal for the game-winner.
Capital out shot Marietta 13-3 in the game and held an 8-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Marietta's Jenna Freeman (Bay Village) made six saves, while Capital's Courtney Allan had two saves in the game.
The Pioneers will hit the road for their next contest, a 4:30 p.m. match up with the Heidelberg Student Princes on Friday (Oct. 20). |
