Pioneers
advance to the Fall Invitational championship with 3-1 shootout
victory over Albright
Game officially ends in a tie
Sept. 9, 2006
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Marietta College and Albright College women's
soccer teams finished in a scoreless battle in the first game of
the Fall Invitational, hosted by Penn State-Altoona Saturday (Sept.
9). Because it was a tournament, however, the two teams went to
a shootout and the Pioneers advanced with a 3-1 victory.
Marietta (1-1-2) was out shot by Albright (1-0-1) 18-9 in the game,
but freshman goalkeeper Jenna Freeman (Bay Village)
made 11 saves to preserve her second career shutout.
All of the excitement came after the completion of the official
game. In the shootout, which featured the best-of-five penalty kicks,
both squads missed their first attempt.
Junior Colby Cardwell (Anchorage, AK/Robert Service)
gave Marietta a 1-0 advantage with a goal in round two. Freeman
followed it up with a save. Freshman Rachel Ladouceur (Calcutta/Beaver
Local) put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 after she beat the keeper in round
three. This time, Albright found the back of the net to pull within
one, 2-1. Senior Dana Donchess (Poland/Poland Seminary)
was next to shoot and she also scored to start round four. Freeman
sealed the match with her third save of the shootout.
Marietta advances to take on host Penn State-Altoona Sunday (Sept.
10) at 2 p.m. to decide the championship.
