Lady Pioneers fall at home to Blue Streaks 90-78
Beckett grabs a career-high 19 rebounds, one shy of school record

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team came up short or its objective Saturday (Feb.16) afternoon, losing to John Carroll University 90-78 on Fenton Court. The Blue Streaks were able to cool down the hot-shooting Lady Pioneers after its recent two game win streak. The loss drops Marietta’s record to 5-17 overall and 2-14 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). John Carroll improves to 15-8 overall and 10-6 in the OAC.

Senior guard Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) led all scorers with 22 points and also added four assists. Junior guard Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) scored 15 points while dishing out five assists. Sophomore Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds, one shy of tying the school record.

Alex D’Amico came off the bench to lead John Carroll with 21 points. Lee Jennings scored 16 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Erin Zahariev scored 13 points, Caitlin Sureck scored 12 points and Rachael Price added 11 points in the victory.

The first half saw both teams trade baskets and featured seven lead changes. Marietta led by two, 23-21, with 10:31 left in the first half after a Driscoll three-pointer. John Carroll outscored the Pioneers 25-8 over the final 9:29 of the half to lead at halftime, 46-31. The Blue Streaks held a steady duble-digit lead throughout the second half to control the pace of the game. Marietta would close the gap to nine, 80-71, with 3:23 left in the game. That would be as close as the Pioneers would come, as John Carroll regrouped and secured the 90-78 victory.

For the game, Marietta finished 22-of-63 (.349) from the field, 8-of-22 (.364) from behind the arc and 26-of-34 (.765) from the free throw line. John Carroll finished 31-of-77 (.403) from the field, 7-of-23 (.304) from three and 21-of-26 (.808) from the free throw line. Marietta held the edge in rebounding, 48-44, but committed 16 turnovers to Joh Carroll’s 11.

Marietta will host Mount Union on Senior Night Wednesday (Feb. 20) night at Fenton Court.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
