Marietta women lose hard fought game to Wilmington 59-45
Beckett records double double in loss

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team gave visiting Wilmington College all it could handle Saturday (Feb. 2) afternoon at Fenton Court in a 59-45 loss. The loss drops Marietta's record to 3-15 overall and 0-12 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Wilmington improves to 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the OAC.
Junior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) led the Pioneers with a career-high tying 15 points and dished four assists. Sophomore Jamie Beckett (Wooster/Triway) recorded a double double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Wilmington's defense held Marietta's two leading scorers Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) to a combined 11 points and 5-of-26 (.192) from the field.
Kortney Kin led Wilmington with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds. Marianne McGoran scored 11 points, while Katie Streck scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
The two teams battled in a physical affair for most of the game. The first half featured many early lead changes early before control went to the Pioneers. Marietta led by seven, 24-17, with 5:10 left in the opening half. Wilmington fought back and took a one-point lead, 27-26, into the locker room. The Quakers would not give the lead back, as they held a steady lead throughout the second half. Marietta could not get the deficit below four, as every basket it hit was answered by a Wilmington bucket of its own. Wilmington got on track near the end to pull out the 59-45 victory on the road.
Both teams struggled from the field for most of the game. Marietta finished 20-of-70 (.286) from the field, 5-of-28 (.179) from behind the arc and 0-of-1 (.000) from the free throw line. Wilmington finished 23-of-56 (.411) from the field, 6-of-25 (.240) from three and 7-of-11 (.636) from the free throw line. Wilmington held the edge on the glass 45-40. Marietta won the turnover battle committing 14 to Wilmington's 16.
Marietta will play at Capital on Wednesday (Feb. 6) night. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. |
