Marietta women win big at Oberlin, 80-54
Lady Pioners out shoot Yeowomen on the road to pick up fourth win of the year
Jan. 2, 2008
OBERLIN, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball ball took to the road during the holiday and returned with an 80-54 victory over the Oberlin Yeowomen. With the win the Lady Pioneers improve to 3-7 overall on the year, while Oberlin falls to 1-8.
Hot shooting propelled Marietta, who had not played since Dec. 14, to its third win of the season as it shot 26-of-52 (.500) from the field, including 11-of-21 (.524) from behind the arc, to go along with 17-of-18 (.944) from the free throw line. Oberlin finished 19-of-56 (.339) from the field, 3-of-15 (.200) from three, and 13-of-17 (.765) from the free throw line.
Senior guard Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) led four double figure scorers for the Pioneers with 17 points. Sophomore Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) scored 15 points, junior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) scored 14 points and senior Stephanie Dowd (Willoughby/Willoughby South) added 10 points. Carraher also led Marietta with seven rebounds and Dowd collected six rebounds.
Roneisha Kinney led Oberlin with 16 points and eight rebounds. Liz Thompson and Alyssa Clark each scored 10 points for the Yeowomen.
Oberlin led 2-0 but that was its only lead as Carraher hit a three to put Marietta ahead and the Pioneers never let the Yeowomen in front again. Marietta quickly used their hot shooting from behind the arc to build a strong 18 point lead at the half. The Pioneers then played smart, sound basketball the last 20 minutes to secure the 26-point victory on the road.
Marietta will return to Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play on Saturday (Jan. 5) as they play host to the Capital Crusaders. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. at Fenton Court.
