Lady Pioneers stumble in OAC opener with visiting Polar Bears
Ohio Northern shoots 69% in 87-46 victory

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s basketball team' two-game win streak came to an end Saturday (Dec. 1) afternoon with a 87-46 loss to rival Ohio Northern University in both team's Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener on Fenton Court.
The Polar Bears, who improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the OAC, shot a blistering 33-of-48 (.688) from the floor, including 16-of-19 (.842) in the second half. The Pioneers fell to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in league play after shooting 19-of-48 (.396) from the field. Ohio Northern added 10-of-15 (.667) from long range, while Marietta hit 7-of-17 (.412) from the three-point line. The Polar Bears out rebounded the Pioneers 28-20 and won the turnover battle 18-12.
Marietta was paced offensively by senior guard Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Junior guard Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) added 12 points, including 10 in the first half and the Pioneers' first seven of the game. Sophomore guard Whitney Swain (Belpre/Warren Local) contributed a career-high eight points in the loss.
Ohio Northern, who had assists on 26 of its team's 33 field goals, was led by Erin Brand with 24 points and seven rebounds. Emily Culbertson and Jenny Markle added 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Marietta is back in action on Wednesday (Dec. 5) when it travels to Westerville, Ohio, for a 7:30 p.m. match-up with Otterbein College. |
