Lady Pioneers fall to Gators 69-47 in consolation game of Allegheny Tip-off Tournament
Marietta paced by Pagenhardt's 19 points in loss

MEADVILLE, Pa. — The Marietta College women’s basketball team wrapped up its weekend at the National City Tip-off Tournament with a 69-47 loss to host Allegheny College Saturday (Nov. 17) afternoon in the consolation game. With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 0-2 on the year. The Gators improved to 1-1.
Marietta once again started slow on Saturday, allowing its opponent to build an early double-digit lead. The Pioneers missed their first three shots and turned the ball over three times before senior Stephanie Dowd (Willoughby/Willoughby South) hit a jumper four minutes into the game to make the score 9-2 in favor of the Gators.
Allegheny increased its lead to 15 points, 22-7, midway through the first half. Sophomore Jamie Beckett’s (Wooster/Triway) layup with 6:22 remaining cut the deficit to seven points, 22-15, but the Gators stretched their lead back to 13 at intermission and took a 36-23 lead into the locker room.
Marietta, who turned the ball over 13 times, went 10-of-24 (.417) from the floor, including 0-2 from long range, in the first half. Allegheny, who gave the ball back to Marietta 11 times, shot 14-of-29 (.483) from the field, including 4-of-6 (.667) from three-point range.
The Pioneers, who shot 9-of-25 (.360) in the second half, never got closer than 13 in the final 20 minutes. The Gators led by as many as 26 points before time ran out on their 69-47 victory.
Overall, Marietta shot 19-of-49 (.388) from the floor, including 0-of-6 from long range. The Pioneers turned the ball over 27 times and were out-rebounded 39-28. Allegheny finished 27-of-57 (.474) on the day. The Gators hit 7-of-14 (.500) from beyond the arc and had 25 give-aways in the win.
Senior Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) continued to shoot the ball well early in this season. The guard, who added two assists and three steals, went 8-of-10 from the floor to finish with 19 points, 14 of which came in the second half.
Junior guard Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) added 10 points and five rebounds, while Beckett finished with seven points and four boards.
Brittany Bell paced Allegheny with 16 points. Stephanie Wolf and Jill Gregory both added 11 points, while Jennifer Robinson contributed 10 points in the win.
The Lady Pioneers will return to action Saturday (Nov. 24) when they welcome Denison, New Jersey City and Thiel to Ban Johnson Arena for the 23rd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament. Marietta will open the tournament with a game against Thiel at 6 p.m., while Denison battles New Jersey City at 8 p.m. The consolation game will take place Sunday (Nov. 25) afternoon at 1 p.m. and the championship will be decided at 3 p.m. |
