Lady Pioneers' second half comeback leads to 58-54 overtime victory and third straight win

ADA, Ohio - The Marietta College women's basketball team improved its record to 8-8 in the OAC and remained alone in fifth place with a 58-54 overtime victory over host Ohio Northern Saturday (Feb. 12). Senior standout Rebecca Tokodi (Marietta/Parkersburg Catholic, WV) carried the Pioneers most of the game and her teammates stepped up in key situations allowing Marietta to leave Ada with the win.

Marietta (10-12, 8-8 OAC) trailed 41-31 with 11:57 to go in the contest, after Ohio Northern (11-12, 6-10 OAC) open the second period with a 14-4 run. The Polar Bears, however, were held scoreless over the final 5:40 and the Pioneers capped off a 17-7 run with a lay-up by freshman Olivia Newsome (Jumping Branch, WV/Summers) with 36 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

The Pioneers controlled the extra five minutes, leading by as many as eight, before time ran out and gave Marietta a very important road victory.

Tokodi went 10-of-18 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the line to finish with a career-high 30 points. She also added eight rebounds, five blocks and two steals. Tokodi scored the 500th point of her two-year career on Saturday and now has 504.

Freshman Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, MD/Southern Garrett) added eight points and seniors Heather Bowman (Greenville) and Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover) each finished with seven in the victory. Bowman also dished out a team-high seven assists.

The Polar Bears were led by Erin Brand with 12 points and Megan Cevasco with 11. ONU out rebounded the Pioneers 41-29 but committed 21 turnovers compared to MC's 14.

Marietta has now gone 8-5 since the new year and its eight league wins are the most since 1994, when the Pioneers finished 9-9. The Navy Blue & White will face a tough test Wednesday (Feb. 16) when they play host to Capital at 7:30 p.m.
