Pioneers sweep visiting Hornets 3-0 in volleyball
Marietta improves to 4-1 with win over Kalamazoo

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team continued
its non conference schedule Wednesday (Sept. 5) with a match-up
against visiting Kalamazoo (Mich.). The Pioneers were pushed each
game but swept the match 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-23) to improve to
4-1 on the season. Kalamazoo fell to 1-4.
Junior Caity Shirk (Middleburg Heights/Midpark)
once again teamed up with classmate Emily Wheatley (Wyoming)
to run the offense. Shirk collected 25 assists, while Wheatley had
14.
Sophomore Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted) paced
the attack with nine kills, while senior Marissa Barnhart
(Avon) finished with eight kills. Juniors Melissa
Browne (Lisbon/David Anderson) and Sarah Vadaj
(Streetsboro/Kent Roosevelt) added seven kills apiece.
Senior libero Casey Davis (Amanda/Amanda Clearcreek)
finished with a team-high 20 digs, and senior Jessica Craig
(Uniontown/Lake) added 12 digs in the win.
The defense was also aided by six total blocks. Vadaj had the lone
solo block and was in on three assisted blocks. Shirk, Browne and
Barnhart all added a pair of block assists.
Marietta is back in action Friday (Sept. 7) evening. The Pioneers
travel to Defiance, Ohio, to compete in the Defiance College Invitational.
Marietta opens with a match against Huntington (Ind.) at 5 p.m.
and then plays Concordia (Mich.) at 7 p.m. The Invitational concludes
on Saturday (Sept. 8) when the Pioneers play two more matches. Their
opponents will be based on the results of the first day of matches.
