ATHENS, Ohio — The Marietta College Track & Field program traveled to Ohio University on Saturday (May 3) afternoon to compete in the Green & White Invitational. The Pioneer men had three individual champions and outscored eight other teams to win the competition with 110 points. Marietta’s women set two school records and finished fifth among the eight schools with 50 points.

NEW ORLEANS, La. — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) released its fourth NCAA Division III Coaches Power Rankings of the outdoor season on April 29, and Head Coach Derek Stanley's Marietta College men’s team (225.84 points) sat 42nd in the poll, while the Pioneer women (204.56 points) was voted No. 45.

WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field program displayed its continued progress against the competition at the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Championship on Friday (April 25) and Saturday (April 26). The Pioneer women, who placed ninth a year ago, finished fifth with 65 points, while the Pioneer men, who placed 10th a year ago, finished sixth with 44 points at the 10-team event. Head Coach Derek Stanley’s squad made the biggest jump up the final standings when comparing this year's standings to last year's standings.
Mount Union’s men finished with 183 points to defeat runner-up Ohio Northern by 20.5 points. Heidelberg was third with 107 points and was followed by Baldwin-Wallace (83), Wilmington (76.50), Marietta (44), John Carroll (38), Muskingum (32), Capital (31) and Otterbein (22). Otterbein’s women finished with 175 points to win the title. Baldwin-Wallace (162.50), Ohio Northern (79.5), Capital (77), Marietta (65), Wilmington (55.5), Heidelberg (51), Mount Union (48.5), John Carroll (41) and Muskingum (25) rounded out the standings.

Three school records fall in final tune-up for OAC Championship

WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field team made the most of its final tune-up for next week’s Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Championship by taking a pair of runner-up finishes at the 2008 Wilmington Invitational. The Pioneers broke three school records en route to collecting 109.50 points in the men’s competition and 140 points in the women’s competition. Host Wilmington swept the event with its men compiling 163 points and its women scoring 159 points.
Freshman Seth Beckner (Red House, W.Va./Buffalo) broke the school’s 33-year old record in the Pole Vault on Saturday. Beckner, who finished second, cleared 4.47m (14-08.00). He surpassed Rick Bond’s 1975 mark of 4.44m (14-07.00) to take hold of the school record.

NEW ORLEANS, La. — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) released its second NCAA Division III Coaches Power Rankings of the outdoor season on April 15, and Head Coach Derek Stanley's Marietta College women’s team (199.25 points) was voted No. 25 in the poll, while the Pioneer men (219.37 points) sat 39th.
Calvin (Mich.) College (261.83 points) was atop the women's rankings, which included 51 schools that reported their marks. Whitworth (Wash.) University (307.88 points) received the highest ranking in the men's division, which listed 60 institutions.

DELAWARE, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field teams traveled to Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday (April 12) afternoon for the 2008 Division III All-Ohio Championship, which featured representatives from the Ohio Athletic, Heartland Collegiate Athletic and North Coast Athletic conferences. The Pioneer women used 12 individual top 10 performances to collect 52 points and place sixth, their highest finish ever at the meet. Marietta’s men had nine individual top 10 performances and finished in 10th place with 28 points on Saturday. Baldwin-Wallace (120.50) captured the women’s title, while host Ohio Wesleyan (103.50) won the men’s title.
Senior Sheena Spencer (Marietta/Parkersburg) took home Marietta’s only individual title and did so in a dramatic fashion. Spencer won the 400m Hurdles, crossing the line in 1:05.27, which broke Liisa Nichols’ 1987 school record of 1:06.07.

MARIETA, Ohio — Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) rivals Marietta College and Muskingum College went head-to-head in their annual track & field dual meet Tuesday (April 8) evening at Don Drumm Stadium. The Pioneer women set four school records en route to winnings the title 83.50-53.50. The Fighting Muskie men, however, held off the Pioneer men 68-63 to salvage the split.
Junior Jessi Larrison (Batavia) broke her own school record in the 400m Run with a winning time of 1:00.35. Junior Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) improved upon her own school record in the Hammer Throw with a winning mark of 45.24m (148-05). Freshman Tara Leach (West Lafayette) knocked time off her school record in the 200m Dash, crossing the line in first place with a time of 26.79 seconds. In addition, the 4x100m Relay, which featured Leach, senior Mallory Sinoski (Fairpoint/St. Clairsville), senior Sheena Spencer (Marietta/Parkersburg) and freshman Ericka Shafer (East Canton), set a school record while winning its race in 51.12 seconds.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office announced its weekly awards Monday (April 7) afternoon and Marietta College junior throws specialist Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) earned Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors for the third straight week.
Kovacevich participated in three events at the Don Frail Invitational, hosted by Marietta on Saturday (April 5) afternoon. She set a new school record in the Shot Put, taking third place with a mark of 12.16m (39-10.75).

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field program hosted nearly a dozen teams for the Don Frail Invitational on Saturday (April 5) afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium. The Pioneer women (146 points) won the event by two points over Bridgewater (Va.). The Eagles, however, returned the favor by topping the Pioneers in the men's competition, 130-116.
Marietta's women set three school records on Saturday. Junior Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) set a new record in the Shot Put (12.16m/39-10.75), sophomore Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) set a new record in winning the 5,000m Run (18:26.69) and freshman Tara Leach (West Lafayette) set a new record in the 200m Dash (27.10 seconds).

Kovacevich dominated the three field events in which she competed at the OAC Relays, hosted by Marietta on Saturday (March 29) at Don Drumm Stadium. Kovacevich won the Shot Put with a season's best throw of 11.58m (38-00.00). She also took first in the Discus with a personal record toss of 34.48m (113-01). Kovacevich then captured the individual title in the Hammer Throw with a mark of 42.68m (140-00).

Baldwin-Wallace's women won the competition after collecting 169 points, while John Carroll placed second with 125 points and Marietta took third with 116 points. Mount Union dominated the men's side with 249 points, while Muskingum was a distant second with 92 points. The Pioneers collected 56 points and finished fifth.

Kovacevich and the Pioneers competed at the Wake Forest Open March 20-21. She took 18th place in the Hammer Throw with a mark of 41.20m (135-02) and then placed 30th in the Shot Put with a mark of 11.11m (36-05.50) against predominately Division I competition. Kovacevich was also the Field Athlete of the Week once during the indoor season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Freshman Tara Leach (West Lafayette) broke the school record in the 100m Dash to highlight the Marietta College track & field team’s performance at the non scoring Wake Forest Open Friday (March 21) and Saturday (March 22). Leach, who finished 43rd at the predominately Division I meet, crossed the line in 13.17 seconds, which broke teammate Joanna Ferrell’s (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) 2006 record of 13.25 seconds.
Another noteworthy performances on the women’s side came from sophomore Shannon McDonald (Lorain/Amherst Steele). McDonald ran a personal best in the 5,000m Run, finishing in 19:21.08, which placed her 28th.

CONWAY, S.C. — Marietta College sophomore Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) toppled a 22-year old school record in the 3,000m Run to highlight the Pioneers' performances at the 2008 Coastal Carolina University Invitational, which took place Friday (March 14) and Saturday (March 15). In addition, Marietta had 13 other Top 20 finishes at the non-scoring meet, the first outdoor competition for the Pioneers this spring.
Robertson, the school record holder in the indoor 3,000m Run, knocked over 12 seconds off Tina Whitney's 1986 time of 10:44.0. Robertson, who finished sixth in the 48-person field on Friday, crossed the line in 10:31.74. She also holds the outdoor record in the 5,000m Run as well as the indoor record in the Mile Run.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Indoor Track & Field Indoor Championship wrapped up Saturday (March 8) evening with Marietta College’s women taking seventh and the men placing eighth in the 10-team competition, which featured all of the league’s schools. The Pioneers, who had one All-OAC performer on Friday, added six more All-Conference award winners and set seven school records on the final day of competition on the campus of Otterbein College.
Baldwin-Wallace College collected 137 points to narrowly win the women’s title over host Otterbein College, which had 134 points. Marietta finished with 41 points and placed seventh. Ohio Northern University won the men’s crown after compiling 187 points. Heidelberg College took second with 119 points, while Mount Union College was third with 114 points. Marietta’s men finished with 30 points and placed eighth.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field program is gearing up for this weekend's 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held on the campus of Otterbein College. The action is scheduled to begin Friday (March 7) at 1:30 p.m. and conclude Saturday (March 8) around 5:30 p.m. The top three finishers in each event will earn All-OAC honors.
The Pioneers will be looking to move up the league standings at the event, which is the climax of the indoor season. A year ago, Marietta's women earned 26.5 points to place ninth, while the men collected 7 points and took tenth place. Senior Breanne Kosar (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) and junior Jessi Larrison (Batavia) have had the most success at the indoor championship, as both are two-time All-OAC performers. Kosar took second in the High Jump in 2005 and placed third in the event in 2007. Larrison finished third in the 500m Run in 2006 and second in the 800m Run in 2007.

Leach was one of four Lady Pioneers to set a school record at Saturday (March 1) afternoon's Marietta Open #4. She improved upon her own record in winning the Long Jump. Leach, who jumped a school record 4.97m (16-04.00) in her first meet of the season, finished with a mark of 5.19m (17-00.50) on Saturday. Leach, who also holds the school record in the 55m Dash, also took fifth in that event over the weekend, crossing the line in 7.82 seconds.

MARIETTA, Ohio — On Saturday (March 1) afternoon, the Marietta College track & field team had its final opportunity to tune-up for next week’s Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Championship, as the Pioneers hosted the Marietta Open #4, which was the sixth and final indoor competition at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center in 2007-08. Marietta had five more records fall during the meet and placed 2-of-10 with 137 points on the women’s side and 3-of-7 with 116 points on the men’s side of the competition. Seton Hill’s women collected 188 points to win the women’s title, while Concord (W.Va.) had its men take the crown with 150 points.
The Marietta women set four school records and had seven individual champions. Senior Sheena Spencer (Marietta/Parkersburg) set a school record en route to winning the 300m Dash. Spencer finished in 43.04 seconds, almost three seconds than Christi Tims’ previous record of 45.97 seconds, which was set in 2007.

The junior, who was also the OAC Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 4, won the event at Saturday's Marietta Open #3 with a school record throw of 15.43m (50-07.50). He also took second in the Shot Put, another event in which he holds the school record, finishing with a mark of 14.09m (46-02.75).

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field program hosted the Marietta Open #3, its fifth home meet of the 2007-08 indoor season, Saturday (Feb. 23) morning inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. The Pioneers swept the seven-school competition, setting five school records along the way. Marietta’s women compiled 193 points to distance itself from second place Pitt-Johnstown (Pa.) (114 points) and third place Rio Grande (85 points). The Pioneer men collected 196 points, beating out second place Rio Grande (126 points) and third place West Virginia State (92 points).
For the third straight week, Marietta’s men’s Weight Throw record fell; each time it was a new mark from Brian Pallini (Medina). The junior won the event on Saturday with a school record throw of 15.43m (50-07.50). He also took second in the Shot Put, finishing with a mark of 14.09m (46-02.75).

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field team competed at the 5th annual Division III All-Ohio Championships Saturday (Feb. 16) afternoon on the campus of Otterbein College. The Pioneers came home with four new school records to go along with a 10th place finish in the women's competition (18.25 points) and an 11th place finish in the men's standings (24 points).
Otterbein (102.75 points) won the women’s competition, while Ohio Northern (114 points) claimed the men’s title. In all, 19 schools competed in the event.
Junior Brian Pallini (Medina) set a new school record in both the Shot Put and the Hammer Throw, while the men's Distance Medley Relay and the women's 4x400m Relay also set new school records.

Marietta kicks off Winter Weekend with Open Alumni Meet
Select Pioneers to compete at All-Ohio Championship on Saturday

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field team helped kick off the school's annual Winter Weekend festivities with an Open Alumni Meet Friday (Feb. 15) evening inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. The Pioneers, who did compete with their entire squad, finished sixth in the women's rankings with 51 points and eighth in the men's rankings with 28 points. In addition to the current Marietta student-athletes, the competition also brought back a handful of Pioneer alums, who were able to relive their collegiate track & field experiences while back on campus.
Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) captured the women's title with 148, while West Virginia Wesleyan (122 points) and Concord (W.Va.) (106 points) placed second and third, respectively. West Virginia Wesleyan (142.33 points) and Wheeling Jesuit (134 points) swapped spots in the men's standings, while Concord (119.50 points) placed third.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — Marietta College junior throws specialist Brian Pallini (Medina) continued his impressive season in the Weight Throw Friday (Feb. 8) evening. A week after winning the event and coming just shy of his own school record at the OAC Relays, Pallini smashed his school record en route to taking second place in the Weight Throw at the non-scoring Baldwin-Wallace Invitational.
Pallini, who was one of four Pioneer throwers to compete in the meet, entered the competition with a career-best throw of 14.71m (48-03.25). That mark, which came on Jan. 27, 2007, matched Eric Finn, who set the initial record on Feb. 25, 2006, for the best throw in school history. Pallini, the reigning OAC Field Athlete of the Week, erased that record Friday with a top mark of 15.13m (49-07.75). Pallini also took fifth in the Shot Put, finishing with a mark of 14.07m (46-02.00).

Pallini had a successful night at Friday (Feb. 1) night’s OAC Relays, which were hosted by Ohio Northern University. The throws specialist won the Weight Throw competition, which was an exhibition event, with a mark of 14.71m, just missing the school record by less than a millimeter.

ADA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's track team finished sixth and the Pioneer men placed eighth at the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Relays Friday (Feb. 1) night at the ONU Sports Center in Ada, Ohio. The Pioneer women collected 59.50 points to match their finish from a year ago. Marietta's men, which compiled 63 points, moved up one spot from the 2007 event. The Pioneer men had never finished higher than ninth in the event before this season.
Host Ohio Northern won the men's title with 113 points, while Baldwin-Wallace's women took first place after collecting 108 points. Mount Union did not attend the meet, which uses the combination of a school's top two finishes in individual events to determine the amount of points awarded. Therefore, depth has a lot to do with the success of a team at this meet.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's 4x400m Relay set a new school record and the Pioneer men took home the team title to highlight the action at the Marietta Open #2 Saturday (Jan. 26) afternoon inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.
Marietta's men accumulated 159 points and had six individual champions to help it top the five other schools at the competition. West Virginia Wesleyan (151 points) took second and Concord (114 points) was third. The Pioneer women had three individual first place finishes in addition to the first place 4x400m Relay team and just missed out on second place with 122.50 points. West Virginia (148 points) won the meet, while West Virginia Wesleyan (123 points) held off Marietta for second place in the seven-team battle.

Five men's teams and six women's teams joined the Pioneers at the second of six home meets slated for the 2007-08 indoor season.
Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) claimed the men's title with 177 points, while Muskingum took second with 120 points and Marietta finished third with 112 points. Seton Hill (Pa.) won the women's side with 143.50 points, while Wheeling Jesuit placed second with 120 points and Washington & Lee (Va.) was third with 119 points. Pioneers looking to move to next level in Ohio Athletic Conference

MARIETTA, Ohio — Head Coach Derek Stanley is looking to take his 2008 Marietta College track & field team to the next level. Stanley, now in his fifth season, expects nearly 60 student-athletes to join the team in late January when the Pioneers begin the bulk of their schedule, which will include six home indoor and three home outdoor meets.
The Pioneers, who have been building their depth since being reinstated in 2003, return five All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) performers from last year’s team, which saw its women take ninth and men place tenth at the OAC Indoor Championships. The men collected seven points and the women had 26.5 points in the indoor competition. Outdoors, the both teams improved their point totals but their positions stayed the same; the men earned 30 points and the women finished with 41 points.

Gay provisionally qualifies for NCAA Championships at Marietta's First Glimpse Meet
Five school records also fall on Saturday

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College track & field officially kicked off its indoor season Saturday (Dec. 8) afternoon with a First Glimpse Meet at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. The non-scoring meet, which also featured Concord University from Athens, West Virginia, produced its share of individual highlights.
The story of the day came in the men's high jump, when sophomore Zach Gay (Elyria/Oberlin) cleared 2.01 meters (6-07), which provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. The event, hosted by Ohio Northern University, will take place March 14-15 in Ada, Ohio.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College, which installed a new track in 2005, will play host to the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The NCAA Championships Committee recently informed College officials of this decision.
The Championships will take place May 21-23, 2009, at Don Drumm Stadium.
The event marks the first time since 1987 that a National Championship will be decided in Marietta, Ohio. Marietta College hosted the first 12 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships, which began in 1976.

Wilkerson promoted to full-time assistant of Marietta College track & field program
Former Wilmington All-American named first full-time assistant in program's history

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College track & field took another important step in program history Wednesday (July 18), when Brent Wilkerson was named a full-time assistant coach.
With the promotion, Wilkerson, hired by Head Coach Derek Stanley as a graduate assistant in the fall of 2006, becomes the first full-time assistant in the 47-year history of the program.
