Feb. 16, 2008
WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field team competed at the 5th annual Division III All-Ohio Championships Saturday (Feb. 16) afternoon on the campus of Otterbein College. The Pioneers came home with four new school records to go along with a 10th place finish in the women's competition (18.25 points) and an 11th place finish in the men's standings (24 points).
Otterbein (102.75 points) won the women’s competition, while Ohio Northern (114 points) claimed the men’s title. In all, 19 schools competed in the event.
Junior Brian Pallini (Medina) set a new school record in both the Shot Put and the Hammer Throw, while the men's Distance Medley Relay and the women's 4x400m Relay also set new school records.
Pallini broke a 28-year old record in the Shot Put, held by Greg Black (14.42m/47-04.00) since 1981. The junior, who placed second, threw his shot 14.75m (48-04.75). He then followed it up with another second place finish and school record. This time it came in the Weight Throw, when he hit a mark of 15.33m (50-03.50). The mark broke his own record of 15.13m (49-07.75), which he set a week earlier.
The men’s Distance Medley Relay, which featured senior Harrison Potter (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili), freshman Anthony Williams (Columbus/Bishop Hartley), sophomore Cody Thomas (North Olmsted) and sophomore Josh Mickle (Madison), ran to a sixth place finish with a school-record time of 10:41.94. They shaved over two seconds off the previous record, which was set earlier this month.
The women’s 4x400m Relay continued to set new standards this season. Sophomore Brenda Puckett (Eaton/Preble Shawnee), junior Jessi Larrison (Batavia), freshman Tara Leach (West Lafayette) and senior Sheena Spencer (Marietta/Parkersburg) placed seventh overall, finishing in 4:13.44. The foursome set the previous mark, 4:16.19, in January.
In addition to the four school records that fell on Saturday, Marietta had a number of top five finishes. Leach took fourth in the Long Jump, finishing with a mark of 4.95m (16-03.00). Freshman Seth Beckner (Red House, W.Va./Buffalo) placed fourth in the Pole Vault, clearing 4.25m (13-11.25). Senior Breanne Kosar (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) finished fifth in the High Jump, clearing 1.55m (5-01.00). Junior Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) also took fifth in the Weight Throw with a season’s-best mark of 13.08m (42-11.00).
