Pioneer track & field opens season with First Glimpse meet
Two school records set and another matched

MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2006-07 indoor track & field season got underway Saturday (Dec. 9) afternoon when Marietta College hosted the First Glimpse meet in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. Seven teams and a handful of individuals competed in the open un scored invitational, which was the first of five home meets for the Pioneers this indoor season. [Results]

Marietta's afternoon was highlighted by four school record performances on the women's side and four individual champions on the men's team.

Fizzy Ramsey (Danville, Ky./Boyle) was the lone individual champion on the women's side. The senior tied her indoor school record in the pole vault (10-06.00/3.20m).

Sophomore Melissa Schulte (Pemberville/Eastwood) set a new standard in the triple jump with a second place finish. Schulte, who also took second (15-03.50/4.66m) in the long jump, cleared 32-06.50 (9.92m) in the triple jump to break the previous record of 31-09.50 (9.69m).

A pair of freshmen broke the previous school record in the 3,000m run. Shannon McDonald (Lorain/Amherst Steele), who took fourth, finished in 11:35.66, while Kaity Smith (Essex Junction, Vt.), who placed fifth, crossed the line in 11:52.00. The previous record was 12:03.00.

Other top three finishers on the women's team were sophomore Leslie Pyle (Kansas City, MO./Pembroke Hill) in the 55m hurdles (3rd/9.40), junior Breanne Kosar (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central) in the high jump (3rd/4-11.75/1.52m), Jennifer Valentic (Medina/Highland) in the pole vault (3rd/8-06.00/2.59m) and senior Rachel Forman (Heath) in the weight throw (2nd/39-10.75/12.16m).

Sophomore Brian Pallini (Medina) won the men's shot put with a personal record throw of 45-04.25 (13.82m). He also took third in the weight throw with another personal record (47-02.50/14.39m).

Freshman Josh Mickle (Madison) won the mile run with a time of 4:46.21. Freshman Kent Reiber (Avon Lake) took third (4:50.21).

Junior Harrison Potter (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) took first in the 3,000 mile run, finishing in 9:18.94. Classmate John Hull (Scott Depot. W.Va./Winfield) placed third with a time of 9:30.71.

In addition, sophomore Jered Mitchem (Marietta/Warren Local) captured the 800m run title, crossing the line in 2:02.66.

The Pioneers will return to action Saturday (Jan. 20) when they hosts the Marietta Open #1.
