Mar. 3, 2006
ADA, Ohio — The 2006 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Indoor
Track & Field Championships kicked off Friday (Mar. 3) evening
inside the ONU Sports Center, on the campus of Ohio Northern University.
The Pioneers had three school-record breaking performances during
the first day of competition, which featured 10 prelims and five
finals.
Freshman Jessi Larrison (Batavia) set a new standard
for Marietta women in the 500m dash en route to a fourth place finish
in the prelims. Larrison completed the race in 1:21.39, surpassing
her previous best, a then-school record of 1:22.68. She advances
to Saturday's finals.
Freshman Jessica Haas (Winchester/Eastern Brown)
also set a new school record in the 400m dash Friday, finishing
with a time of 1:03.34. Unfortunately, Haas finished in tenth place,
one shy of advancing to the final. Larrison held the previous record
(1:03.81).
A third school record fell when freshman Leslie Pyle (Kansas
City, MO/Pembroke Hill) ran to an 11th place finish in the 55m Hurdles.
Pyle finished in 9.16 seconds, surpassing her previous school record
of 9.27 seconds.
The men's team was able to score five points during the opening
night, as freshman Seth Townsend (Belleville, W.Va./Parkersburg
South) took fifth place in the triple jump. Townsend leaped 12.63m
(42-01.25) to set a new personal best. Marietta's other point came
as a result of an eighth-place finish in the distance medley relay.
The foursome, which included Jered Mitchem (Marietta/Warren
Local), Isiah Johnson (Englewood, N.J./Horace Mann),
Harry Potter (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) and
Tim Roberts (Worthington/Thomas Worthington), finished
in a time of 10:59.84.
The Championships will conclude Saturday (Mar. 4) with the remaining
finals. A recap will be available following the event.
