Group of Pioneers compete at Kenyon Invitational
Women break two more records at meet
Feb. 10, 2006
GAMBIER, Ohio – Head Track & Field Coach Derek Stanley took many of his athletes that wanted to compete this weekend, but did not qualify for Saturday's All-Ohio Indoor Championships, to Friday's (Feb. 10) Kenyon Invitational. Although the decision to compete was optional, many took advantage of the opportunity. The women's team broke two more indoor records and finished with 29 points to place eighth, while the men took ninth with 20 points.
Freshman Jessica Haas (Winchester/Eastern Brown), the school's 300m dash record holder, added another MC record — the 500m dash — to her resume Friday. Haas ran to a fourth place finish with a time of 1:26.47. The previous record was 1:26.75 and held by Alana Combs since 2004.
Haas, along with teammates Joanna Ferrell (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South), Cayli Cummons (Parkersburg, W.Va.) and Mallory Sinoski (Fairpoint/St. Clairsville), also broke the school record in the 4x200m relay. The group crossed the line in second place with a time of 1:56.15. The previous record, set in 2005, was 1:57.42.
There were also other women's highlights Friday. Freshman Leslie Pyle (Kansas City, MO/Pembroke Hill) set a new personal record in the 55m hurdles, taking second place with a time of 9.63. Sinoski set a personal record in the 55m dash prelims, crossing the line in 8.15 seconds and placing ninth. Sophomore Janelle Rhodes (Indian River, Mich./Indian Lakes) placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing 8-06.00 (2.59m). Cummons took sixth in the long jump, covering a distance of 13-07.25 (4.14m).
On the men's side, freshman Jason Cocca (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) established a personal record (54.09) in the 400m dash and took fifth. He also took 11th in the shot put, throwing 40-06.00 (12.34m).
Junior Tim Roberts (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) also set a new personal best (1:11.26) in the 500m run and placed third, while Chad Showen (Parkersburg, W.Va./South) matched a season-best jump in the pole vault, clearing 13-06.00 (4.11m), to win first place.
In addition, Joseph Wynes (East Aurora, N.Y.) took 26th in the mile, crossing the line in 5:11.03.
While 15 of Marietta's athletes will be competing Saturday (Feb. 11) at the All-Ohio Championships, the full team will return to action Friday (Feb. 17) for the Ohio Northern Friday Night Series #4.
