May 7, 2005
ALLIANCE, Ohio - For the third straight season, both the Marietta men and women track & field programs placed tenth at the OAC Outdoor Championships. The Pioneer men totaled 17 points this season, while the women finished with four. Mount Union hosted the event, which was won on the men's side by the host Purple Raiders (175 points), while Baldwin-Wallace (165 points) took the women's title.
The Lady Pioneers only points came as a result of a fifth place finish by the 4x100m relay team. The squad, which consisted of Joanna Ferrell (Mineral Wells, WV), Marissa Barnhart (Avon), Mallory Sinoski (Fairpoint) and Cayli Cummons (Parkersburg, WV), set a new school record, crossing the line in 52.09.
Barnhart also set a personal best in the triple jump, leaping to a 12th place finish with a distance of 9.78m (32-01.25).
Freshman Breanne Kosar (Wheeling, WV), who took second overall in the high jump at the OAC Indoor Championships, placed ninth in the outdoor event, clearing 1.47m (4-09.75).
The Pioneer men were led on day two by junior Clark Spears (Brunswick), senior Chris Taylor (Mineral Wells, WV) and freshman Dan DeZordo (Louisville).
Spears ran to a fifth place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase, setting a new season's best with a time of 10:07.25. Taylor, the reigning OAC Indoor high jump champion, finished fifth outdoors, clearing 1.93m (6-04.00). Both Spears and Taylor earned four points for their efforts Saturday. In addition, DeZordo picked up three points with a sixth place finish in the shot put. The freshman set a new personal best in the event with a toss of 14.38m (47-02.25).
This was the final competition for coach Derek Stanley's team, who continues to grow since being reinstated a couple years ago. |
