Pioneers compete at Day One of OAC indoor Championships

MARIETTA, OhioThe Marietta College track team completed Day One of the 2005 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Indoor Championships Friday night. The Pioneer men sit in eighth place after two events with three points, while MC's women did not score a point in the first three events.

The Ohio Northern men's squad leads through two events with 14 points, while Baldwin-Wallace holds a slim advantage through three events in the women's competition with 24 points.

Senior Chris Taylor (Mineral Wells, WV) finished seventh in the men's long jump, covering a distance of 6.41m (21-00.50) to give Marietta two points.

The Pioneers' other point came in the distance medley, when Darkeevin Peoples (Akron), Jeff Sherman (Akron), Harry Potter (Rochester, NY) and Clark Spears (Brunswick) took eighth place with a time of 11:12.94.

Eric Finn (Shelby) and Dan DeZordo (Louisville) competed in the weight throw, a non-scoring event at the OAC Championships. Finn placed sixth (13.11m/43-00.25) and DeZordo finished seventh (12.69m/41-07.75).

Marietta's Anthony Banks (Colonial Heights, VA) set a personal best in the 400m dash preliminaries. The sophomore finished 11th with a time of 52.29. Peoples also ran the 400m dash and placed 14th (54.26). Tim Roberts (Worthington) was the only other man to compete Friday. He finished 12th in the 500m run with a time of 1:12.09.

Alecia Benninger was the top finisher for the women, as she placed seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 11.44m (37-06.50).

Also finisihing for the women Friday were Mallory Sinoski (Fairport), who placed12th in the 55m hurdles (9.51) and Marissa Barnhart (Avon), who set a personal record and took in the long jump (4.75m/15-07.00).

Marietta will look to move up the standings tomorrow, the final day of the OAC Indoor Championships. Action gets underway in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center at 10 a.m.
