MARIETTA, Ohio — The Wartburg ( Iowa) College women scored all 52 of their points and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh men collected 32 of their 46 points on day three to claim the team titles Saturday (May 23) at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship, hosted by Marietta College.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College freshman Jayshon Irvin (Vero Beach, Fla./Sebastian) knows he could have performed better, but he'll take a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash and the All-American status that he earned at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday (May 23) in Marietta, Ohio.

"It could have been better, but I'm satisfied with it. My start could have still been better," said Irvin, who was the eighth seed in the final. "I was more nervous today than I was for the trial yesterday. I was thinking about not false starting and wanting to live up to my own expectations of getting in the top four."

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta sophomore Zach Gay (Elyria/Oberlin) relished the fact he had his own cheering section. Before each jump Gay's fans rooted him on as he competed in the High Jump at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday (May 23) in Marietta, Ohio.

Gay, who entered the weekend tied for the 10th best jump, earned All-America honors by tying Wilmington freshman Braden McMonigle with a jump of 2.03m (6-08). Gay was close to reaching a personal-best leap of 6-09 on his two final attempts.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Day two of the 2009 Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship, hosted by Marietta College, began with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh junior Ellie Sitek being crowned as the first multiple national champion. MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College freshman Jayshon Irvin (Vero Beach, Fla./Sebastian) was put through the emotional ringer Friday (May 22) at the second day of action in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Marietta, Ohio.

"When we were checking in and warming up at the (Dyson Baudo Recreation Center) I was having fun and I was real loose," Irvin said. "But on the bus ride over and we made it to the track I started getting real nervous. However, when it was time to race I had calmed down."

Marietta's Stanley named USTFCCCA Great Lakes Regional Women's Coach of the Year
Sixth-year coach also selected during indoor season in 2009

NEW ORLEANS, La — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year on Monday (May 18), and Marietta College Head Coach Derek Stanley earned Women’s Coach of the Year honors in the Great Lakes Region. Under Stanley’s tutelage, Marietta female student-athletes broke 11 school records during this year’s outdoor track & field season. Stanley, now in his sixth year with the Pioneers, guided the women to a runner-up placement at the 2009 All-Ohio Outdoor Championship and a fifth place finish at the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

Local fans will have two Pioneers to cheer for during the three-day event, which will feature 688 student-athletes from over 100 institutions. NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Marietta College sophomore High Jump specialist Zach Gay (Elyria/Oberlin) took advantage of his final opportunity to improve his provisional mark for the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will take place May 21-23 in Marietta, Ohio.

Gay, who met the minimum standard with a successful jump of 2.02m (6-07.50) at the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Gold Meet, topped his career-best mark by clearing 2.05m (6-08.75) at the Gregory Track & Field Invitational, hosted by North Central College on Friday (May 15) night. Gay’s jump vaulted him up the provisional qualifying chart and into the top 10.

Both Pioneers earn league honor for second straight year

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its 2009 Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field Academic All-OAC recipients on Thursday (May 14) morning and two Marietta College student-athletes earned the league honor. Junior distance runner Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) was named Academic All-OAC, while senior throws specialist Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) was given honorable mention.

The OAC faculty athletic representatives selected the award winners. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 grade point average, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least her second year of participation in the sport.

Marietta's Sims provisionally qualifies in 400m Hurdles at Swarthmore Last Chance Meet
Freshman gives the Pioneers a provisional qualifier in eight events

SWARTHMORE, Pa. — Marietta College freshman sprinter Brittany Sims (Columbus/Eastmoor Academy) ran a provisional qualifying time in the 400m Hurdles at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet Monday (May 11) evening. Sims became the sixth individual to qualify for the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will take place May 21-23 in Marietta, Ohio.

Sims, the school record holder in the 100m Dash, added the 400m Hurdle record to her resume on Monday after crossing the line in 1:03.93. Her time was just under the provisional qualifying mark of 1:04.00. Sims finished third in the race.

Seniors honored at Monday's OAC banquet

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) recently announced the 2009 Clyde A. Lamb Award winners, and Marietta College senior track & field throwing specialist Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) and senior baseball standout Justin Merryman (New Philadelphia) were among the 10 female and 10 male student-athletes, one from each of the OAC institutions, chosen for the prestigious honor.

All 20 Clyde A. Lamb Award winners were honored at the 25th annual OAC Awards Banquet on Monday (May 11) evening at the Holiday Inn in Worthington. Until 2004, a committee of athletics directors and faculty representatives selected a male and female from the 20 student-athletes to be awarded Clyde A. Lamb Scholarships after the banquet. Criteria for the award includes at least two years participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his or her institution.

MARIETTA, Ohio — It was a busy weekend for the Marietta College track & field athletes that have remained on campus with the goal of competing at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will take place May 21-23 in Marietta, Ohio. Pioneers traveled to three different meets in three separate states over the course of Friday (May 8) and Saturday (May 9). When the results were posted, Marietta had achieved four more NCAA provisional qualifying marks, increasing its team total to seven qualifiers.

The Women's 4x400m Relay, which featured a new lineup that consisted of freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic), senior Jessi Larrison (Batavia), freshman Brittany Sims (Columbus/Eastmoor Academy) and senior Sheena Spencer (Marietta/Parkersburg), traveled to the Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana University on Friday. The Pioneers made the most of their trip by running a school record time of 3:54.98. That performance was under the NCAA provisional time of 3:56.60 and placed the Pioneers among the top 10 4x400m Relays in the nation.

TIFFIN, Ohio — Marietta College senior Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) provisionally qualified in the Hammer Throw for the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship, highlighting the Pioneers’ performance at Tuesday (May 5) evening’s Dragon Last Chance Meet, hosted by Tiffin University. Marietta College is hosting the 2009 NCAA Championship May 21-23.

Kovacevich, who won back-to-back titles in the Hammer Throw at the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Championship earlier this season, broke her own school record by nearly a meter on Tuesday. She unleashed a throw of 47.25m, which currently ranks 31st on the list of NCAA provisional qualifiers in the event.

Women's 4x400m Relay sets school record at Jesse Owens Invitational
Marietta athletes still trying to qualify for NCAA Outdoor Championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Select members of the Marietta College Track & Field team traveled to the Jesse Owens Invitational Saturday (May 2) looking either qualify or improve their provisional marks for the upcoming 2009 NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championship, which will take place in Marietta, Ohio, May 21-23.

The women’s 4x400m Relay, which featured freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic), junior Christi Tims (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls), senior Jessi Larrison (Batavia) and senior Sheena Spencer (Marietta/Parkersburg), inched closer to a NCAA provisional mark and set a new school record on Saturday. The Pioneers combined to cross the line in 3:56.95, breaking their old mark of 3:56.95, which was set earlier this season. Marietta finished just 0.35 seconds off that sought-after provisional mark.

WILMINGTON, Ohio — Marietta College freshman Jayshon Irvin (Vero Beach, Fla./Sebastian) was named the Most Outstanding Sprinter of the Meet after winning both the 100m and 200m Dashes to highlight the Pioneers' performance on Saturday (April 25) at the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship, hosted by Wilmington College. Head Coach Derek Stanley's program maintained its placement from a year ago with a fifth place finish (82 points) in the women's competition and a sixth place finish (60 points) in the men's standings. Ohio Northern University swept the championship after its women compiled 125 points and its men totaled 172 points.

WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College women sit in seventh and the men are in ninth (five points) after day one of the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship, hosted by Wilmington College.

Marietta’s women earned 10 of their 16 points in the Pole Vault as they placed three runners in the top eight. Freshman Kim Keesler (Chagrin Falls) finished fourth after clearing 3.36m (11-00.25). Sophomore Olivia Holiday (Malta/Morgan), the runner-up at last year’s event, took sixth and freshman Emma Vierheller (Orrville) placed seventh after both cleared 3.16m (10-04.25).

Pioneer women place second and men take fourth in final tune-up for OAC Championship

WILMINGTON, Ohio — Marietta College won six individual events and a pair of relays at the Wilmington College Invitational Saturday (April 18), its final tune-up for the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Track & Field Championship, which will also take place at Wilmington April 24-25. The Pioneer women compiled 141 points to capture runner-up among its seven competitors. The Marietta men finished with 116 points to place fourth against six other schools. [Results]

Marietta’s 4x100m Relay teams both ran to victories on Saturday. Freshmen Lauren Asbury (White Sulphur Springs, W.Va./Greenbrier East), Kim Keesler (Chagrin Falls), Brittany Sims (Columbus/Eastmoor Academy) and Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) won the women’s event after crossing the line in 50.15 seconds. Freshmen Jayshon Irvin (Vero Beach, Fla./Sebastian), Ryan Householder (Frazeysburg/Tri-Valley), Caleb Downey (Heath) and sophomore Matt Hickman (St. Mary’s, W.Va.) then won the men’s race with a combined time of 42.42 seconds.

Irvin became the third Pioneer in as many weeks to qualify for the 2009 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship, which will be hosted by Marietta College May 21-23 at Don Drumm Stadium. Irvin, who was ranked third after the prelims of the 100m Dash when he ran 10.97 seconds, turned it on in the finals and beat everyone to the line in a school record 10.71 seconds. Pallini continued his magical season on Saturday (April 4) afternoon with a pair of first place finishes at the Don Frail Invitational at Don Drumm Stadium. MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Brian Pallini (Medina) provisionally qualified in the Shot Put for the 2009 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship and seven school records fell to highlight the Marietta College track & field team's performance at the 2009 Don Frail Invitational Saturday (April 4) at Don Drumm Stadium.

More than a dozen schools competed in the annual event, which took place on the site of this year's NCAA Championship. Marietta's women claimed a share of the team title after matching Notre Dame College with 94.50 points. The Pioneer men placed third with 104 points.

On Saturday, Gay earned the distinction of being the first Pioneer to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will be hosted by Marietta College May 21-23 at Don Drumm Stadium. Marietta women take first and men third at five-team league competition

BEREA, Ohio — Saturday (March 28) afternoon was a historical day for the Marietta College track & field program at the OAC Gold Meet as a pair of athletes set multiple school records and a third became the first Pioneer to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will be hosted by Marietta College May 21-23 at Don Drumm Stadium. In addition, for the first time in the history of the OAC Gold Meet, which was hosted this year by Baldwin-Wallace College, Marietta took home a team title as the women placed first and the men took third at the five-team competition.

The Pioneer women compiled 181 points to narrowly defeat host Baldwin-Wallace, which had 177.5 points. John Carroll took third with 160.50 points, while Mount Union placed fourth with 101 points and Muskingum was fifth with 59 points. Baldwin-Wallace won the men’s side with 220.50 points. Mount Union placed runner-up with 149 points, Marietta took a close third with 143 points, John Carroll was fourth with 129 points and Muskingum finished fifth with 56.50 points.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Marietta College track & field team wrapped up its competition by setting a pair of relay records at the non-team scoring 2009 Wake Forest Open on Saturday (March 21).

The Pioneers' 4x400m Relay, which featured freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic), junior Christi Tims (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls), senior Jessi Larrison (Batavia) and senior Sheena Spencer (Marietta/Parkersburg), set a new school record after crossing the line in 3:58.20. The time was less than two seconds off the NCAA Championship Provisional Qualifying Standard.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Marietta College freshman Brittany Sims (Columbus/Eastmoor Academy) broke the school record in the 100m Dash to highlight the Pioneers’ performance on day one of the non-team scoring 2009 Wake Forest Open on Friday (March 21).

Sims, who won her heat, crossed the line in 12.71 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 13.17 seconds, which was set last year by Tara Leach. She finished tied for 18th place among 49 entrants.

CONWAY, S.C. — The Marietta College track & field team spent the majority of its spring break working out in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The week culminated with the Pioneers participating in their first outdoor action of the season at the Coastal Carolina University Asics Invitational on Friday (March 13) and Saturday (March 14).

Marietta posted 12 Top 10 finishes at the non-scoring meet, set a school record on Friday and came close to breaking both 4x100m Relay school records on Saturday.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Marietta College senior All-America standout Brian Pallini (Medina) capped off his stellar indoor career with an eighth place finish in the Weight Throw at the 2009 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship Friday (March 13) afternoon on the campus of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Pallini, who entered the competition with the sixth-best mark this season, qualified to the finals with a throw of 16.87m (55-04.25) in the second flight of Friday’s prelims. That mark, which came in his third attempt, helped him began the finals in seventh place.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College senior standout Brian Pallini (Medina) will go head-to-head with the other top throwers in the nation when he competes Friday (March 13) afternoon at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship, which is being hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. Pallini, the second Pioneer male to qualify and participate in the NCAA D-III Indoor Championship since the school reinstated the program, enters the championship ranked sixth among the 16 qualifiers in the Weight Throw. COLUMBUS, Ohio — 18 All-Ohio Athletic Conference performers helped the Marietta College track & field team close out a successful final day of the 2009 OAC Indoor Championship and secure their team’s highest placement at the event since the program’s reinstatement. The Pioneer women compiled 91 points to finish in fourth place, three spots higher than a year ago when they had 41 points. Ohio Northern swept the competition. The Polar Bear women collected 147 points to beat out second place Otterbein (104.50 points) and third place Baldwin-Wallace (92.50 points). Ohio Northern’s men finished with 183 points, ahead of Heidelberg (137 points) and Mount Union (118 points).

COLUMBUS, Ohio —The Marietta College track & field team jumped out to a solid start at the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Indoor Championship on Friday (March 6) night at Capital University. The Pioneer women currently sit in a tie for second place with 23 points, while the Pioneer men are in sixth place with nine points after the first day of competition. [OAC Championship Site]

Marietta had three student-athletes earn All-OAC honors in the Weight Throw, which is an exhibition event and does not count toward team scoring. Senior Brian Pallini (Medina) earned league recognition after a second place finish in the Men’s Weight Throw. The 2008 champion and top seed finished with a mark of 16.06m (52-08.25). Senior Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) matched Pallini’s finish in the Women’s Weight Throw as she took runner-up with a mark of 14.52m (47-07.75). Sophomore Stephanie Hammond (Toledo/Central Catholic) was right behind Kovacevich in third place with a toss of 13:50m (44-03.50).

The Pioneers have lofty expectations and will be looking to move further up the league standings at the event, which is the climax of the indoor season. A year ago, Marietta's women earned 41.0 points to place seventh, while the men collected 30.0 points and took eighth place.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field team hosted 20 schools for the Marietta Open #3 on Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. The Pioneers collected a pair of second place finishes in their final tune-up for next week’s Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Indoor Championship, which will be hosted by Capital University on March 6-7.

Mount Union College won the men’s competition with 159 points, while Marietta placed second with 114.50 points and Penn State University-Behrend was third with 103 points. John Carroll University claimed the women’s crown with 115 points. Marietta’s women were a close second with 93 points and Mount Union finished third with 78 points.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its Athletes of the Week on Monday (Feb. 23) afternoon for the period of Feb. 16-12, and Marietta College junior track & field standout Randi Robertson (Avon Lake) earned OAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors for her effort last week.

Robertson helped the Pioneer women win the Rick Meindl Invitational, which was hosted by Capital University. Marietta collected 156.5 points to defeat the 11 other schools at the competition. Overall, the Pioneers set four school records and had seven event champions.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Marietta College senior Brian Pallini (Medina) continued to improve his chances of making a trip to the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship on Friday (Feb. 20) night when he unleashed another school record and NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark in the Weight Throw at the Rick Meindl Invitational, hosted by Capital University.

Marietta’s women produced a solid team effort to win the 12-team competition with 156.5 points. The Pioneer men, meanwhile, also received a team effort and collected 107 points, which placed them second only to NCAA Division I Miami University. Overall, the Pioneers set four school records and had seven event champions.

Head Coach Derek Stanley's Marietta College squad rose to the challenge and finished with its highest placement in the six-year history of the competition. Four more school records fall on Friday

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field team hosted its fourth indoor meet of the 2008-09 season when 11 schools joined the Pioneers for the annual Marietta Alumni Meet on Friday (Feb. 6) at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.

The Pioneer men racked up 129 points to place third overall behind West Virginia Wesleyan, which had 187.50 points, and Robert Morris (Pa.), which totaled 160 points. Marietta’s women took fourth place with 80.50 points. WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Head Coach Derek Stanley's Marietta College track & field program got its first look at the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) competition when Otterbein College hosted the 2009 OAC Relays on Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon.

The Pioneers rose to the challenge by posting their highest finishes ever at the meet, which uses the combination of a school's top two finishes in individual events to determine the amount of points awarded. Therefore, depth has a lot to do with the success of a team at this meet. Marietta's women compiled 91.5 points to place third, while the Marietta men accumulated 64 points to finish sixth. Ohio Northern University swept the event after its women collected 114.50 points and its men totaled 104 points.

KENT, Ohio — Marietta College senior thrower Brian Pallini (Medina) admitted that he has always had the big throws in him. On Friday (Jan. 30) night that foresight proved accurate, as Pallini unloaded a NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship provisional qualifying mark in the Weight Throw while at the Kent State Field House. The NCAA Division I meet featured host Kent State University, Miami University, Ohio University and Youngstown State University.

Pallini, who entered his final season as the school record holder (15.69m) in the Weight Throw, has subsequently broken his own record in each of the last three weeks. On Jan. 17, he hit a mark of 16.01m while at the Marietta Open #1. Pallini then tossed the weight 16.09m at the Marietta Open #2 on Jan. 24.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track & field team's promising season built further momentum on Saturday (Jan. 24) afternoon at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center with its performance at the Marietta Open #2. The Pioneers set five more school records en route to a first place finish in the men's competition and a runner-up placement in the women's standings.

Marietta's men racked up 165 points to top seven other schools, including second place West Virginia Wesleyan, who had 150 points, and third place Glenville State (W.Va.), who finished with 123 points. The Pioneer women, who competed against eight schools, compiled 162 points, which was second only to Marshall (W.Va.), who had 215 points. West Virginia Wesleyan finished third with 153 points.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — Marietta College senior thrower Brian Pallini (Medina) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Field Athlete of the Week on Monday (Jan. 19) afternoon.

Pallini swept the throwing events at the Marietta Open #1, which took place on Saturday (Jan. 17) at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. He won the Weight Throw with a school record mark of 16.01m (52-06.50) and then took the Shot Put crown with a mark of 14.64m (48-00.50).

Marietta women place first and men take second at home event

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior thrower Brian Pallini (Medina) and freshman distance runner Jennifer Emmert (Martinsburg, W.Va.) set new Pioneer records in the first field event and running event, respectively, to set the tone for a successful Marietta Open #1 on Saturday (Jan. 17) afternoon inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. The Pioneer women captured first place with 185 points, while the Pioneer men finished runner-up after collecting 145 points. [Results]

In all, six Marietta records fell at the meet, which marked the Pioneers’ return to action after the semester break and included nine men’s squads and eight women’s teams. Marietta had individual champions in 18 events—10 on the women’s side and eight on the men’s side.

2008-09 Marietta College track & field outlook
Pioneers looking to continue climb up OAC standings this season

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College track & field will work to continue its ascent up the Ohio Athletic Conference standings in 2009. Led by sixth-year Head Coach Derek Stanley, the Pioneers expect the return of 28 letterwinners and a roster of nearly 80 student-athletes when the season begins. It is a special year for Marietta, as the program will not only host five indoor and two outdoor meets but also the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, which will take place May 21-23.

The Pioneers return all seven of their All-OAC performers from the 2008 OAC Indoor Championships, where the women took seventh with 41 points and the men placed eighth with 30 points. In addition, six of Marietta’s nine All-Conference award winners are back from the 2008 OAC Outdoor Championships, where the women finished fifth with 65 points and the men were sixth with 44 points.

Amanda Wood awarded NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Internship
Former Central College student-athlete to help Marietta College prepare for 2009 Championships

MARIETTA, Ohio — Amanda Wood, a former student-athlete at Central (Iowa) College, became the newest member of the Marietta College athletics department Monday (Oct. 6) morning. Wood was hired to fill a one-year position, which will assist Head Coach Derek Stanley and the department in the preparation for the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Championships will take place at Don Drumm Stadium in Marietta, Ohio, on May 21-23, 2009.

"I am very happy with Amanda being on staff," said Stanley. "She already has a ton of event management experience in various sports with specific experiential knowledge of track & field. She will help to reduce and distribute the workload of this championship, helping the athletic department continue normal operations and keeping me focused on my team."
