AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office announced the 2008 women’s tennis award winners Thursday (May 1) morning, and Marietta College junior standout Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) was named All-OAC first team for the third straight season.
Carraher, who entered 2008 with a nine-match win streak, extended her run to 18 matches before falling to John Carroll’s Sara Crane, a fellow All-OAC first team performer, late in the season.

BEREA, Ohio — Head Coach Danika Cox's Marietta College women's tennis team had its season come end with a 5-0 loss to top-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College in the Quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament on Tuesday (April 22) afternoon. It is the second straight spring that the Yellow Jackets (16-6) have knocked the Pioneers (3-8) out of the tournament.
Baldwin-Wallace took control of the match by winning all three doubles points and then wrapped up the victory by winning at second and fourth singles. Action at first, third, fifth and sixth singles was unfinished, as the match ended as soon as one team collected the necessary five points to advance.

Pioneers open OAC Tournament play at Baldwin-Wallace

BEXLEY, Ohio —The Marietta College women’s tennis team lost 6-3 to host Capital University Saturday (April 19) afternoon in both team’s regular season finale. The loss drops Marietta’s record to 3-8 overall and 2-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Capital improves to 6-7 overall and 4-5 in the OAC.
Capital jumped out to a 6-0 lead before rain halted play with three matches still to be decided. After an extensive delay, the Crusaders eventually defaulted those matches to the Pioneers in order to end the match. Junior Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson), freshman Kristina Reed (Grove City) and sophomore Jen Wolfe (Ravenswood, W.Va.) earned victories at first, third and fifth singles, respectively.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College and Capital University men's tennis teams got together a day early for their final Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) match of the spring when the two programs matched up Friday (April 18) afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center. The Crusaders spotted the Pioneers a 2-0 lead by only bringing five players but were still able to pull off the 5-4 victory.
Marietta finished the season 1-12 overall and 0-9 in the OAC for the second straight season. Capital improved to 4-11 and 2-6 in the OAC.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team continued its busy final week of the season with a 7-2 loss at Notre Dame College Thursday (April 17) afternoon. It was the second time this spring that the teams matched up with Notre Dame winning both meetings. The Pioneers fell to 1-11 overall, while the Falcons improved to 6-9.
Freshman Sam Vincent (Parkersburg, W.Va.) earned a point for Marietta at fifth singles, winning 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 16-14. Sophomore Andrew Bolton (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) also won his match at third singles, winning 3-6, 7-6 (10-2), 10-7. Both matches went to third-set pro-set tiebreakers.

The Pioneers, who celebrated Senior Day for Stephanie Dowd (Willoughby/Willoughby South) before the match, fell to 3-6. The Lady Racers improved to 2-14.
Marietta junior Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) remained undefeated at first singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. The win was Carraher’s 18th straight, dating back to 2007. MARIETTA, Ohio — For the first time this season, the Marietta College women's tennis team was forced inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center for a match because of bad weather. The change of scenery did not hamper the Pioneers, who won their third match in the last four opportunities, defeating visiting non-conference foe Shawnee State University 6-3 Friday (April 11) afternoon. Marietta improved to 3-3 on the season, while Shawnee State fell to 6-3.
Marietta opened by taking two of three in doubles play. Carraher, playing first singles, won her match 6-3, 7-5 to improve to 5-0 this spring. The first team All-OAC performer is now 24-3 in her three-year career.

Carpenter improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 at fourth singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Senior Mark Briggs (Westerville/South) also won his third singles match for the second day in a row. He took the first set 6-1, fell 5-7 in the second set and then bounced back to win the third set 6-3.

First-year Head Coach Danika Cox’s squad improved to 1-2 both overall and in league play. The Student Princes fell to 1-3, 0-1 in the OAC.
Dowd, playing in sixth-singles, had the fate of the match on her shoulders, as the two rivals were locked at 4-4 through the first eight points of the game. Dowd, who won the first set, 7-5, took care of business in the second set, winning 6-4 and giving the Pioneers the one-point win.

Both of Marietta's points came on comebacks and needed third-set tiebreakers to help overcome a straight game loss in the opening set. MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College senior Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls) won his first singles match of the season Monday (March 24) afternoon, but visiting Notre Dame College swept the rest of the points en route to the 8-1 victory on a chilly day at the Beren Tennis Center.
Rockhold, in his third year of tennis, took the first set, 6-1, but fell in set two, 3-6. He bounced back, however, to win the tiebreaker, 10-5, and thus the sixth-singles match. Rockhold and senior teammate Ryan Callihan (Stout/Portsmouth West) nearly earned another point at second doubles, leading early. Unfortunately, the Falcons put together a late rally and won 8-5.

ADA, Ohio — Head Coach Mike Snell's men's tennis team opened up the 2008 season Wednesday (March 19) with a 9-0 road loss to defending Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) champion Ohio Northern University at the ONU Sports Center. The Pioneers fell to 0-1, 0-1 in the OAC. The Polar Bears improved to 5-3, 2-0 in league play.
