Marietta men net 6-3 win over Bethany
Pioneers snap a 19-match losing streak

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team celebrated a 6-3 victory over visiting Bethany (W.Va.) College Tuesday (April 1) afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center. The win marked the first for the Pioneers (1-4) in 20 matches, dating back to April of 2006.

Marietta got off on the right track by winning two of three doubles matches against Bethany (0-5). Ryan Callihan (Stout/Portsmouth West) and Mike Carpenter (Parkersburg, W.Va.) won a point, 8-0, at second doubles. Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls) and Sam Vincent (Parkersburg, W.Va.) then won another point, 8-2, at third doubles.

In singles play, the Pioneers were able to clinch the match with wins in third through sixth singles. Mark Briggs (Westerville/South) won 6-0, 6-2 at third singles. Carpenter took his fourth singles match 6-4, 6-3. Rockhold improved to 2-1 at singles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at fifth singles. Ryan Whitnable (Vincent/Warren Local) closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth singles.

Marietta will return to action on Wednesday (April 2) when it resumes Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play at home against rival Muskingum College at 3:30 p.m.
