Carraher named first team All-OAC; Smith awarded second team honors
May 3, 2006
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference office announced its 2006 women's tennis award winners Wednesday (May 3), and both freshman Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Davidson) and sophomore Elizabeth Smith (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg Catholic) earned recognition from the league coaches.
Carraher became the first Pioneer to ever receive first team All-OAC honors, while Smith's second team award is also the first for a Marietta student-athlete in women's tennis.
Carraher, who joined the team following its spring break, brought a lot of experience to the court and quickly helped solidify the top of the Pioneers' lineup. Carraher finished the season with a 9-2 record at first singles and won each of her last seven matches. Her only two losses came to OAC Player of the Year Andrea Isaac (B-W) and fellow first team honoree Kaitlyn Macdonald (ONU). Carraher also teamed up with senior Lauren Stermer (Ocala, Fla./Forest) to go 7-3 at first doubles this year.
Smith began the year at first singles, but slid over to second singles when Carraher arrived. Smith compiled a 6-2 record at second singles and finished 8-5 overall at singles play. She also ended the year with a lengthy win streak of six matches. Smith went 3-11 in doubles play, seeing most of her time at second doubles.
Marietta, under the direction of Head Coach Kesha Bradford, finished the year with a 5-9 overall record and went 3-6 in the OAC. The Pioneers advanced to the quarterfinals of the OAC Tournament for the first time in school history, before losing to eventual champion John Carroll. |
