Pioneers open OAC Tennis Tournament play Friday at 8 a.m.
Women seeded seventh, while men enter as ninth seed

MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2006 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) men and women’s tennis tournaments kick off Friday (Apr. 28). The 10 women’s teams will gather in Mason, Ohio, while the men will compete in Alliance, Ohio.
Marietta’s women earned the seventh seed in this year’s tournament after finishing the regular season with a 4-6 record overall and a 3-6 record in the OAC. The Pioneer men, who are seeded ninth, ended the regular season 2-8 overall and were 1-8 in league play.
Freshman Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Davidson) will lead the Pioneer women into action against tenth-seeded Capital at 8 a.m. Marietta won the regular season match-up, 8-1, on April 13.
Carraher went 7-2 at first singles during the regular season. Senior Lauren Stermer (Ocala, Fla./Forest) and sophomore Elizabeth Smith (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg Catholic) also bring winning records at singles play into the weekend.
The winner of the Marietta vs. Capital match will take on second-seeded John Carroll at 1 p.m.
Marietta’s men will take on Wilmington at 8 a.m. in its first-round match-up. The Quakers defeated the Pioneers, 6-1, on April 19.
The Pioneer men are led by junior Eddie Yu (Hilliard/Davidson), sophomore Mark Briggs (Westerville/South) and freshman Josh McLaughlin with two singles wins each.
The winner of the Marietta vs. Wilmington match will take on top-seed Ohio Northern at 1 p.m.
The semifinals of both the men and women are set for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, with the finals scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. |
