Marietta tennis falls 8-1 to Wilmington
Apr. 22, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio - The weather in southeast Ohio has not cooperated with the Marietta College women's tennis team in 2005, as all of its home matches have been moved indoors because of rain. Friday (Apr. 22) was no different for the women, who made the transition from the Beren Tennis Center to the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center (DBRC) to take on visiting Wilmington on the final weekend of the regular season for Marietta. The Quakers improved to 7-9 overall and 3-5 in the OAC with an 8-1 victory over the host Pioneers.
Marietta (2-9, 1-7 OAC) picked up its only point at second singles when Lauren Stermer (Ocala, FL/Forest) defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-4.
Liz Basich (Montville/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and Emily Simms (Kankakee, IL) each took their Quaker opponents to three sets in third and fourth singles, respectively, but Wilmington was able to pull out each point with 6-4 third-set wins.
The Lady Pioneers close out the regular season tomorrow, when they host the reigning OAC champion John Carroll Blue Streaks at 1 p.m.
