Women's tennis knocks off Hiram 8-1

HIRAM, Ohio - The women's tennis team traveled to Hiram for its third dual match of the spring Thursday (Mar. 3). The Lady Pioneers defeated the Terriors 8-1. This is the first win for the Pioneers since the 2003 season.
Senior Elizabeth Smith (Vienna, WV/Parkersburg Catholic) picked up a 8-5 win in second singles. Senior Emily Simms (Kankakee, IL) won her third singles match 8-6. Junior Lauren Stermer (Ocala, FL/Forest) was victorious in fourth singles (8-5). Courtney Bruckner
(Washington, PA/Trinity) and Sasha Katanic (Belgrade, Serbia/Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy) each won 8-0 in fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
Liz Basich (Montville/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and Stermer took the point in first doubles with an 8-8 (9-7) victory, Bruckner and Smith won at second doubles (8-6) and Simms and Erin Carlin (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler Area) finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory.
Marietta will return to action Tuesday (Mar. 29) when they visit Muskingum (OH) for an OAC match.
