Day Five — By Candice Alexander

It was our last day in Puerto Rico and an early morning for some of the Pioneers. A few of the players were up early enough to walk the beach and enjoy the beautiful sunrise this morning. Others took advantage of some extra rest and slept in until breakfast at 9:00 a.m. After breakfast, we had a chance to do some more exploring, shopping, and relaxing by the pool or beach.5029

Some of the girls enjoyed an exhilarating ride on the Banana Boat while others basked in the sun or played in the water for most of the afternoon. We also completed a few more things off our San Juan Souvenir check list as well. Freshman Laura Frazee finally got to drink fresh milk out of a coconut!  She had been dying for one since the first day we stepped foot on the beach.

After soaking up some sun, it was time to finish packing and then head to lunch. We were allowed to split up into small groups for lunch, but we all ended up at Chili’s anyways! After we finished lunch, it was time to head onto the bus, and leave for the airport at 4:00 p.m. You would think traveling with over 20 people might be a little hectic getting from terminal to terminal, but everything went smoothly. Our first stop was Charlotte and then to the Columbus Airport.  After exiting the plane, the cold Columbus air welcomed us back to Ohio.

We were sad to leave the beautiful weather and sunshine in San Juan, Puerto Rico, but there is always that better feeling of being home with family and sleeping in your own bed again! Overall we really enjoyed all of the adventures in San Juan and can’t wait to get back to playing more conference teams. Our next opponent will be the Ohio Northern Polar Bears on January 10, 2015 at 3:00 p.m.

Day Four — By Brooke Borich

Today we got up at 6:55 p.m. to go eat team breakfast in the hotel together. After breakfast we departed for shoot around at 7:15 p.m. at a local YMCA.5027

After the shoot around finished we came back to the hotel and cleaned up for lunch at Chili's. When we got back from lunch we all had some free time to relax in the hotel before leaving for our game at 4:15 p.m.

Our game began at 6:00 p.m. against Skidmore. We were up at half time by eight, 30-22, but ended up losing with a final score of 67-53. Even though we didn't pull out the win we stuck together as a family and had the privilege of experiencing Puerto Rico.

After the game we ate pizza in the hotel and were given some free time to explore the area of Puerto Rico before lights out.

Day Three — By Heather Booth

On Day 3 in Puerto Rico we took care of business.

Our pregame breakfast was at 10:00 a.m. followed by treatments in the hotel and a departure for the game at 12:00 p.m.5023

When we got to the gym we laced up our shoes and did dynamic warm up.  After running out to some elaborate Spanish music it was finally game time.

We started the first half with a lot of energy from our bench and our awesome 11 fans who traveled all the way down here.

Suffolk went on a run and by halftime we were down by 12. But in the locker room coach made some adjustments and we clawed our way back in the second half to win by two, 65-63. We had a lot of people step up and make big plays for us, and it was definitely a team win.

After the game we cleaned up for dinner. Before going over our next opponent, we took a make-shift ice bath in our hotel tubs and rested up for Skidmore.

Traveling to Puerto Rico and making unforgettable memories is incredible. But the icing on the cake would be to fulfill our mission by winning our last two non-conference games.

Day Two — By Sierra Sigman

The second day in San Juan started early with breakfast by the pool around 9:00 a.m. Shortly after breakfast we grabbed a charter bus and headed to the coliseum where we had a short but hard practice. Practice went well after having five days with our families at home, you could tell we were ready to get to work, or as coach would say “begin our business trip”. When we returned to the hotel we hopped into the pool and continued on with our work out, followed up by stretches in the hot tub. Shortly after, the team returned to their rooms and began to get ready to tour Old San Juan.

When we arrived of course we were all snapping photos of the beautiful buildings and area around us, but the first stop was Castillo San Felipe del Morro, ‘El Morro’. This was a national historic site built to protect San Juan Bay’s deep harbor for attack by sea. It was the first good harbor for sailing ships en route to the New World after a one month long Atlantic voyage from Europe. The building has six different levels, each one in charge of a different defense. This fortress took over a 250-year period for Spain to build.

After exploring the amazing fortress we started to tour in down town Old San Juan. The streets were mostly one way and only big enough for one car! Along the streets were many shops, some stores we have here in the states and others we do not. Many restaurants and bars lined the streets with Puerto Rican music and outside eateries. Including the restaurant we stopped at to have dinner. Greengos Caribbean Cantina was were we enjoyed anything from nachos, burritos and tacos for dinner.

Not long after dinner did we start our search for a taxi. Let’s just say it is hard to find a taxi service that will bring three vans to one location and haul 22 people, not to mention there was a concert down town that brought in many others who were also looking for a way home or to their next destination. So after many different stops and changes of location we all made it back safely and are glad to be resting in our hotel beds for tomorrow’s game at 2:00 p.m.

Day One — By Jessica Brogan

For the Marietta College women's basketball team, Christmas didn't end on the 25th. Ours continued into the 26th as we awaited our trip to Puerto Rico.

We arrived at the Columbus airport at 3:30 a.m., which seems early, but our excitement levels kept us going. We left the cold weather at 5:35 a.m. and didn't look back. Charlotte was our first stop where we landed just as the sun was rising and the excitement continued to rise as well. After a short layover, our next stop was Puerto Rico!!! After a long flight with necks and backs cramping, we arrived at our destination. As we started to land, we could see our home for the next 5 days.5020

Once we landed and got our luggage (luckily no ones was lost!) we walked outside and the warm air hit us. The wind was blowing and the sun was shining. It was perfect. After we arrived at the hotel, we went to the beach and the pool. The beach was a blast and several players splashed in the ocean while some laid out and others were buried in the sand. The team then went to the pool at the hotel before it was time to clean up for dinner.

Tonight for dinner we went to an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant and several players tried the famous mofongo. It was a dish that was made up of mashed plantain, which is similar to a banana, and stuffed with the meat of your choice. The long day was finished off with some ice cream.

Tomorrow we will get up and practice at the gym as we begin our preparation for our two games. After practice we will spend the afternoon touring old San Juan. That's for all now!
