Marietta wins 29th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot

MARIETTA, Ohio – Junior Candice Alexander posted her second double-double o the season with 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead Marietta College to a 79-56 win over Ohio Valley University Sunday (Dec. 1) in the championship game of the 29th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot sponsored by BSN Sports.
Alexander was named the Lisa Wagner Most Valuable Player after leading the Pioneers in scoring in both games of the tournament. Alexander made 8-of-11 shots from the floor in the title game.
Ohio Valley won the tip and scored four seconds into the game for its only lead of the day. Marietta’s Tori Dixon responded with a historic three-pointer on the ensuing possession. The first of Dixon’s three treys in the game broke the Marietta all-time record of 162 three-pointers held by Amanda Carraher (2005-09).
The Pioneers gradually extended the lead pushing it to as many as 21 points in the first half, 35-14. OVU finished the first period with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 13 points, 37-24, at halftime.
A three-pointer from Meghan Miller at the 6:52 mark of the second half got Ohio Valley within nine points, 60-51. Marietta answered right back scoring the next 14 points to push the lead back to 23 points, 74-51, with 4:06 remaining.
Dixon finished with 15 points and four assists. Junior Heather Booth chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds, while freshman Morgan Liedtke had 10 points.
Senior Paige Lamb scored nine points to go along with her 15 points and 13 rebounds against Mount St. Joseph in the first round to earn all-tournament honors. Freshman Mackenzie Kiser, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds last night, was also named to the all-tournament team after scoring nine points and eight rebounds against the Scots.
Senior Shelby Way represented Ohio Valley on the all-tournament team. Way scored 10 points and dished out four assists against the Pioneers. Saira House led the Scots with 12 points, while Imani Ward grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
Marietta outrebounded Ohio Valley 54-49, while both teams committed 17 turnovers in the game.
Marietta shot 28-of-65 (43.1%) from the floor, 3-of-11 (27.3%) behind the arc and 20-of-29 (69.0%) at the free throw line. Ohio Valley hit 22-of-80 (27.5%) from the floor, 5-of-30 (16.7%) from three-point range and 7-of-8 (87.5%) at the line.
Kenyon College defeated the College of Mount St. Joseph by the score of 74-64 in the consolation game. Kenyon’s Maureen Hirt had back-to-back 20-point performances to earn all-tournament honors. Heidi McManus represented Mount St. Joseph on the all-tournament team.

MARIETTA, Ohio – Kenyon College defeated the College of Mount St. Joseph by the score of 74-64 Sunday (Dec. 1) in the consolation game of the 29th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot sponsored by BSN Sports. Kenyon improves to 4-3 overall, while MSJ falls to 0-5 on the season.
One night after scoring 26 points in a tournament-opening loss, senior Maureen Hirt notched a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Kenyon. Hirt tallied 46 points and 18 rebounds in two Turkey Shoot games to earn all-tournament honors.
Kenyon scored the first two points of the game and never trailed in the victory. The Ladies held a 42-32 advantage at halftime and led by as many as 18 points, 56-38, early in the second half.
Three other Kenyon starters reached double figures in scoring. Senior guard Maggie Boelter tallied 14 points. In the post senior Autumn Anderson and junior Lauren Kriete eached chipped in with a dozen points. With nine rebounds, Anderson just missed her first double-double of the season.
Mount St. Joseph sophomore Heidi McManus was named to the all-tournament team after scoring 11 points and grabbing six rebounds Sunday. For the tournament, McManus tallied 27 points and nine boards.
Junior Brooke Mosler led the Lions against Kenyon with 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Tara Dennis posted a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Junior Melanie Monahan finished with 11 points, while sophomore Chelsea Castleberry had 10 points.
Kenyon held a slim 53-47 advantage on the glass. The Ladies committed 10 turnovers and forced 14 Lion turnovers.
Kenyon shot 30-of-72 (41.7%) from the floor, 5-of-19 (26.3%) from three-point range and 9-of-17 (52.9%) at the line. Mount St. Joseph was 22-of-68 (32.4%) from the floor, 7-of-21 (33.3%) behind the arc and 13-of-25 (52.0%) at the line.
Ohio Valley slips by Kenyon in Turkey Shoot first round

MARIETTA, Ohio – Senior Shelby Way completed an old-fashioned three-point play sinking a layup and foul shot with two seconds on the clock to give Ohio Valley University (W.Va.) a 70-67 win over Kenyon College Saturday (Nov. 1) in the 29th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot sponsored by BSN Sports.
Ohio Valley led by as many as eight points, 55-47, midway through the second half but went scoreless for the next four minutes. Kenyon took advantage of OVU’s drought and scored 11 straight points to lead 58-55 at the 4:56 mark.
Kenyon held the lead until 2:27 when two free throws from Way tied the game at 63-63. Kenyon scored on its next possession to retake the lead, but another three-point play for Ohio Valley put the Scots in front 66-65 with a minute remaining.
With time running down Kenyon missed its next shot and fouled on the rebound putting Ohio Valley back on the line. Angelique Green hit one of two making it a two point game, 67-65. Kenyon senior Maureen Hirt drained a jumper to knot the score at 67-67 with 18 seconds left.
Ohio Valley head coach David Wadlington called a timeout to set up the last play which worked perfectly for the Scots as Way delivered the winning bucket.
Hirt led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor, including four from long range. She also led Kenyon with six rebounds.
Ohio Valley had three players in double figures with Kayla Parsley’s 16 points leading the way. Parsley also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Saira House added 14 points and five boards, while Way finished with 11 points.
In addition to Hirt, Kenyon had four other starters in double figures. Maggie Boelter scored 11 points and five rebounds. Meredith Williams and Autumn Anderson both chipped in with 10 points. Anderson added five boards on the night.
Kenyon outshot Ohio Valley from the floor 54.2% to 37.5%, but the Scots dominated the offensive glass and took 72 shots to just 48 for Kenyon. OVU grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, which resulted in 18 second chance points.
For the game, Kenyon was 26-of-48 (54.2%) from the floor, 5-of-14 (35.7%) from three-point range and 10-of-18 (55.6%) at the line. Ohio Valley shot 27-of-72 (37.5%) from the floor, a lowly 1-of-23 (4.3%) behind the arc and 15-of-18 (83.3%) at the free throw line.
Ohio Valley advances to the championship game against Marietta on Sunday (Dec. 1) at 3:00 p.m. Kenyon will play Mount St. Joseph in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
Lamb leads Marietta into Turkey Shoot championship game

MARIETTA, Ohio – Senior Paige Lamb had a career day to lead the Marietta College women’s basketball team over the College of Mount St. Joseph, 82-58, Saturday (Nov. 30) in the first game of the 29th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot sponsored by BSN Sports.
Lamb equaled her career-high with 15 points but tallied a double-double with a game-best 13 rebounds. She scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half.
Marietta never trailed in the game and lead by as many 27 points. The Pioneers held a comfortable 38-28 lead at halftime.
A free throw from Melanie Monahan got the Lions within nine, 44-35, with 16:07 left in the second half. But Marietta responded with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach, 57-35.
Junior Candice Alexander was Marietta’s leading scorer with 16 points including 11 in the first half. Freshman center Mackenzie Kiser continues to play well off the bench. Kiser notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Mount St. Joseph sophomore Heidi McManus led the Lions with 16 points. Classmate Madie Long chipped in with 10 points, while Morgan Froehlke had nine points. Brooke Mosler and Tara Dennis each had seven rebounds.
The Pioneers dominated the paint outscoring MSJ 32-16 in the post and pulling down 64 rebounds to just 42 for the Lions. Marietta’s rebounding advantage led to 25 second chance points.
Neither team shot particularly well. Marietta was 29-of-75 (38.7%) from the floor, 5-of-21 (23.8%) from three-point range and 19-of-30 (63.3%) at the free throw line. The Lions were 19-of-68 (27.9%) from the floor, 6-of-28 (21.4%) behind the arc and 14-of-22 (63.6%) at the line.
The Pioneers will play for their 14th Turkey Shoot title Sunday (Dec. 1) at 3:00 p.m. against Ohio Valley University, a 70-67 winner over Kenyon in the first round. Mount St. Joseph will meet Kenyon College at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
Pioneers hosting 29th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot
MARIETTA, Ohio – Thanksgiving at Marietta College means women’s basketball. The 29th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot sponsored by BSN Sports tips off with four games on Saturday (Nov. 30) and then wraps up with two games on Sunday.
New to the Turkey Shoot this season is a pair of high school games featuring four local prep squads. Marietta High School and Waterford High School will open the festivities at noon on Saturday. Belpre High School will face Caldwell High School at 5:00 p.m.
The college action starts at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday when Marietta plays the College of Mount Saint Joseph. Kenyon College and Ohio Valley University (W.Va.) will close day one with a 7:30 p.m. start. Sunday features two college games with the consolation match-up at 1:00 p.m. followed by the championship game at 3:00 p.m.
Marietta, under the direction of second-year head coach Stacia Shrider, enters the weekend with a 3-1 overall record. The Pioneers have won their last three games scoring 90-plus points in each victory and will be looking for their 14th Turkey Shoot title.
Junior forward Candice Alexander averages 12.0 points per game to lead Marietta. She has connected on 75% of her field goal attempts and is second on the team with 6.0 rebounds per game.
Freshman center Mackenzie Kiser is averaging 11.8 points off the bench to go along with 4.5 rebounds. Senior guard Tori Dixon averages 11.3 points and needs to just one three-pointer to set the all-time Marietta College record. She is currently tied with Amanda Carraher (2005-09) with 162.
In addition to Alexander and Dixon, Marietta’s starting lineup will most likely include junior forward Heather Booth (8.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg), senior guard Paige Lamb (7.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg) and freshman point guard Morgan Liedtke (7.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg).
Mount Saint Joseph is making its fourth Turkey Shoot appearance and was the 2009 runner-up to Marietta. Fourth-year head coach Ashley Bland brings the Lions to town with a 0-3 overall record.
A pair of sophomore guards is leading MSJ this season. Heidi McManus averages 16.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per outing, while Meredith Hartfiel scores 11.3 points per game off the bench. Hartfiel is lethal from long range having made 62% of her three-point attempts so far.
Junior forward Mea’ Williams controls the glass for the Lions pulling down 9.0 rebounds per game. She averages 7.3 points as well. At the point, junior Melanie Monahan dishes out 4.3 assists per night.
Ohio Valley University participated in the 1996 and 1997 Turkey Shoots claiming the crown in ’97. David Wadlington is in his fifth season as the Fighting Scots head coach and brings his team to Ban Johnson Arena with a 2-4 overall record.
6-foot-1 senior forward Kayla Parsley is averaging a double-double for OVU with 11.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. Junior guard Angelique Green and freshman forward Imani Ward are both averaging 9.7 points per game.
Senior guard Saira House triggers the OVU offense and is averaging 4.3 assists per game to go along with 9.3 points. Helping in the paint is junior forward Ndeye Meissa Diop with 7.6 points and 7.4 boards.
Veteran head coach Suzanne Helfant brings Kenyon College to the Turkey Shoot for the first time. However, Helfant, who is in her 19th season at Kenyon, is no stranger to this tournament having served as Marietta’s head coach for three seasons (1992-93 to 1994-95).
The Pioneers won two Turkey Shoot titles under Helfant and posted a 13-12 overall record in her final season, the last winning season in Marietta women’s basketball history.
Kenyon, 3-2 on the season, is lead by a trio of seniors. Maureen Hirt and Maggie Boelter average 19.8 and 12.2 points, respectively, in the backcourt. Hirt also leads the Ladies on the glass with 4.6 rebounds per game. Boelter dishes out 4.2 assists per night.
In the post, Autumn Anderson is averaging 14.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Meredith Williams comes off the bench to score 7.2 points and grab 3.4 rebounds per game. Williams is shooting 63% from the floor.
The Turkey Shoot is named in honor of long time Marietta College athletic supporter and local businessman Jim Meagle. Meagle was instrumental in starting the Turkey Shoot and continues to support the Pioneers rarely missing a home game.
