No. 22 Ohio Wesleyan downs Marietta to win Shrine Championship
MARIETTA, Ohio – The No. 22-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University men’s basketball team scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back as the Battling Bishops defeated Marietta College 76-55 in the Championship Game of the 42nd annual Shrine Tournament.
Ohio Wesleyan (2-0 overall) shot 50% from the floor in the first half including 8-of-14 (57.1%) from three-point range to take a 40-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A jumper by Garrett Stephenson with 11:30 left in the first half cut the OWU lead to four, 18-14. However, the Bishops answered with a 9-0 run to push the lead back into double digits, 25-14. Taylor Rieger drained a three with less than a minute in the period to give Ohio Wesleyan their biggest lead of the first half, 40-23.
The Pioneers opened the second half with a little run and trimmed the deficit to 11 points, 48-37, on a jumper from Tyler Hammond. Ohio Wesleyan didn’t panic and gradually pulled away. The Bishops lead by as many as 27 points in the second half.
Greg White and Reuel Rogers led four Bishops in double figures with 14 points each. Rogers was named to the all-tournament team. Taylor Rieger also earned all-tourney honors after scoring 13 points.
Point guard Andy Winters was tabbed the Cliff Rose Most Valuable Player. Winters scored 10 points and dished out nine assists.
Stephenson led the Pioneers with 14 points, while Hammond added 10 points. Stephenson and Jason Humphrey were named to the all-tournament team. Humphrey scored six points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
For the game, Ohio Wesleyan shot 45.6% (26-of-57) from the floor, 50.0% (10-of-20) from long range and 70.0% (14-of-20) from the free throw line.
Marietta shot 36.5% (23-of-63) from the floor, 10.5% (2-of-19) from behind the arc and 58.3% (7-of-12) from the line.
In the consolation game, Frostburg State defeated Defiance College on a buzzer-beater from all-tournament selection Christian Jackson. With the game tied, 74-74, Jackson nailed a jumper with no time on the clock for the win. He ended the game with 20 points.
Defiance was led by all-tournament honoree Logan Wolfrum who scored a tournament-best 34 points in the loss.
Pioneers shoot down Frostburg State 109-83 advancing to Shrine Championship
MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men’s basketball team tied a Marietta Shrine Tournament record by nailing down 16 three-pointers in a 109-83 rout of Frostburg State Friday (Nov. 16) evening. Marietta advances to play Ohio Wesleyan who defeated Defiance in the earlier game.
Senior post #J.J. Martin# led the Pioneers (1-0) with 16 points while grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore guard #Brennan McKean# scored 13 points while senior #Scott Kimmey# scored 12 points in the win. Junior post #Jason Humphrey# added 10 points and snagged a game-high 12 boards.
Frostburg State (0-1) was led by Christian Johnson with 25 points and four rebounds. Kwambina Coker scored 12 points with five rebounds and DeSean Antoine added 11 points for Bobcats.
Frostburg State will face off against Defiance in Saturday’s (Nov. 18) consolation game at 5 p.m. Marietta will then take on Ohio Wesleyan in the 42nd Annual Shrine Tournament Championship game following the consolation match up. You can follow both games on live stats on pioneers.marietta.edu.
Ohio Wesleyan defeats Defiance 69-55 in opening round of Shrine Tournament
MARIETTA, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan defeated Defiance 69-55 in game one of the 42nd annual Marietta Shrine Tournament.
Andy Winters and Taylor Reiger each scored 14 points to lead Ohio Wesleyan (1-0) in the victory. Winters also dished out a game-high eight assists. Marshall Morris chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds. Reuel Rogers added six points while hauling in 17 boards and collecting five block shots.
Bernard Edwards led all scorers with 17 points while grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (0-1). Mason Roth and Logan Wolfrum each chipped in with 10 points a piece for Defiance.
Pioneers set to host 42nd annual Shrine Tournament
MARIETTA, Ohio - Marietta College Men’s basketball team will open up the regular season this weekend as it hosts the 42nd annual Shrine Tournament. Joining in the tournament are Defiance College, Ohio Wesleyan University and Frostburg State University. Marietta will have the target on them having won back-to-back Shrine tournaments.
The games will start on Friday, Nov. 16 with Defiance and Ohio Wesleyan scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. Marietta and Frostburg St. will start at 8 p.m. The tournament will wrap up Saturday with the consolation game at 5 p.m. and the battle for the championship at 7 p.m..
The gates open each day 90 minutes before game time. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Marietta Shrine Club.
Marietta comes into the season picked to finish in the top three in the conference. After losing Kevin Knab and Trevor Halter, the college’s all-time leading scoring duo, to graduation, the pioneers will be looking for others to step into bigger roles this year. Seniors Scott Kimmey and J.J. Martin will be back leading the way after they both garnered all-tournament team honors last year.
Defiance enters the tournament after a good showing against Division I Oakland University. The Yellow Jackets shot over 50 percent from the field led by Senior Logan Wolfrum and Sophomore Drew Frizell who had 21 and 20 points respectively. Junior forward Ryan Hicks will be someone to watch on the boards. He hauled in 10 rebounds in the loss to Oakland.
Ohio Wesleyan begins the year ranked No. 21 by DIII News and No. 22 by d3hoops.com. The Battling Bishops only lost one player from last year’s top 11 contributors and should be ready to roll come Friday night. Senior Andy Winters will be running the point again this year after leading the NCAC in assists for the third straight year. Winters also added 11.5 points per game a season ago. Senior Marshall Morris and Junior Reuel Rogers will anchor the Bishops in the paint providing height and athleticism.
Frostburg State will be looking for new leading scorers this year after losing the top two, Maurice Williams and Troy Docket, from last year. Senior Christian Jackson got off to a good start by pouring in 26 points in an exhibition game against Virginia Military Institute this past Saturday. Sophomore Jabari Kamau pulled in 6 rebounds in the loss. Senior Kwabina Coker will be returning down low after totaling 122 rebounds and 23 blocks in his Junior season. Senior DeSean Antoine will also be key for the Bobcats providing leadership and scoring.
