NEW CONCORD, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its 2008 softball award winners on Sunday (May 4) afternoon following the conclusion of the OAC Tournament, and three Marietta College standouts received recognition. Junior pitcher Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) and junior first baseman Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) earned All-OAC second team honors, while sophomore catcher Katie Woolf (Louisville) received All-OAC honorable mention.
Faulkner, who earned All-OAC second team honors as a designated hitter in 2007, stepped into the role as Marietta’s primary pitcher and finished 13-8 with a 2.22 earned run average in 2008. In 142 innings, the right-hander allowed 64 runs (45 earned) on 138 hits with 45 walks and 89 strikeouts. The highlight of Faulkner’s season came against Heidelberg when she fired a no-hitter in an 8-0 victory. In addition, she struck out a career-high 10 against Capital. Faulkner also batted .333 (29-for-87) and led the team with six home runs, which tied for second in single-season history, to go along with a seven doubles and 25 runs batted in.
McComb led the Pioneers in hitting with a .398 (45-for-113) batting average in 2008. The first baseman also paced the team in hits with 45, runs scored with 33 and stolen bases, where she was a perfect 15-for-15, while adding seven doubles, one triple and 10 RBI this spring. McComb added a team-high 224 putouts. She currently sits second all-time in sacrifices (38) and putouts (736) while third in career stolen bases (40).
Woolf, an All-OAC second team honoree in 2007, batted .388 (40-for-103), which was second to only McComb. She led the squad in RBI with 29, the fourth most for a Pioneer in single season history. Woolf finished second in hits with 40 and home runs with three while adding seven doubles. The catcher also collected 170 putouts this spring.
Marietta, under the leadership of 21st-year Head Coach Jeanne Arbuckle, finished the season 21-13 overall and 9-9 in the OAC, which placed them sixth in the standings. The Pioneers lose three seniors, Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone), Krista Huffman (Woodsfield/Monroe Central) and Nikki Veigel (Canton/South). They finished their careers as the winningest class in school history, compiling a 104-61 (.630) record. |
