MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College head men's basketball coach
Jon VanderWal was voted as one of the top collegiate men's coaches in the State of Ohio by his peers in the annual Columbus Dispatch Men's Ohio College Basketball Coach of the Year balloting released on Saturday (April 22).
In voting by Ohio's head college men's coaches, Xavier's Chris Mack won the award with 10 first place votes. Archie Miller from Dayton finished second in the voting with five first place votes, while Cincinnati's Mick Cronin was third and VanderWal was fourth with three first place votes each.
"Accolades like this just reinforce what we have known all along about Coach VanderWal, that he is among the best in his profession," Marietta Athletic Director
Larry Hiser said. "We are fortunate to have Jon working with the young men in our basketball program and representing Marietta College."
Since building the Pioneer basketball program into a national tournament regular, VanderWal has been a fixture in the top of the Dispatch's annual award voting. He finished third in 2011 when Ohio State's Thad Matta won the award and was second in 2015 behind Dayton's Miller.
VanderWal led Marietta to a 26-5 overall record this winter winning the Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season and Tournament titles. The Pioneers made their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance and fourth in the last five years advancing to the Sweet 16.
