Otterbein Women and Mount Union Men lead after Day 1 of OAC Indoor Track Championships

MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2016 Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship got underway Friday (Feb. 26) afternoon in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center and highlighting the first day of competition was a pair of record-setting performances.

Baldwin Wallace senior Kim Gallavan launched a monster throw in the women's weight throw setting a new OAC record with a distance of 18.34 meters (60-02.00). Gallavan won the conference title in the event for the second straight year. Gallavan's winning throw came on her first attempt of the competition.

On the men's side, Mount Union senior Tyler Orewiler won the pole vault title with a new OAC record height of 5.21 meters (17-01.00). Orewiler passed on the first eight heights and was the lone competitor left in the field when he started vaulting. He cleared 4.81m, 5.00m, 5.10m and 5.21m on his first attempt at each height but missed on all three attempts at 5.31m.

Through the first five events, the Mount Union men sit in first place with 41 team points. Ohio Northern is second with 32 and John Carroll posted 26 points and is currently third. The rest of the field includes Otterbein (24), Baldwin Wallace (22), Heidelberg (19), Capital (16), Wilmington (8) and Muskingum (7).

Otterbein leads the women's team standings with 44 points. Ohio Northern amassed 39 points for second place, while Mount Union is in third with 38 points. Rounding out the women's standings are Baldwin Wallace (23), Heidelberg (20), John Carroll (20), Muskingum (5), Capital (4) and Wilmington (2).

The Championship concludes on Saturday with events starting at 10:00 a.m.
