Toth named first team All-Mideast Region, Byers Rookie of the Year by D3baseball.com

MARIETTA, Ohio – Marietta College senior catcher Alex Toth (Painesville/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) was named to the D3baseball.com All-Mideast Region first team Monday (May 20) afternoon. Senior outfielder Jordan Grilliot (Brookville/Northmont) and freshman pitcher Jason Byers (East Granby, Conn./East Granby) received second team honors. [Complete Team]

Toth and Grilliot have been key pieces to Marietta's success for the past several seasons. Both consistently ranked among the team leaders in nearly every offensive category this season.

Toth led the Pioneers and the Ohio Athletic Conference with a .413 batting average and 20 doubles. His 69 base hits were second best on the in the OAC behind Grilliot's 73. Toth also ranked second on the squad with 40 runs batted in.

One of the best defensive catchers in the country, regardless of division, Toth committed just two errors and allowed opponents only 11 stolen bases in 23 attempts.

Grilliot had a breakout year offensively for the Etta Express. He was second on the team with a .388 batting average and led the OAC with 73 base hits and 107 total bases. Grilliot was ranked in the top-10 in the conference in runs scored, doubles, triples, home runs, runs batted in and stolen bases.

In addition to the impressive numbers on offense, Grilliot was one of the top defensive outfielders in the region. He split time between left field and right field and was one of two Pioneers who started all 46 games this spring.

The left-handed throwing Byers was named the Mideast Region Rookie of the Year after recording one of the best freshman seasons in program history. Byers posted an 8-2 record with a 2.37 earned run average. He led the Pioneers with 14 starts, six complete games and a pair of shutouts.

Byers tied for the OAC lead with eight wins and was the outright leader in strikeouts with 77. His ERA ranked second in the OAC, as did his six complete games and 98.2 innings pitched.
