MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's tennis team defeated Wilmington College Saturday (March 23) by the score of 7-2. The Pioneers improve to 1-6 overall and 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington falls to 0-2 overall and in the OAC.
Starting the match with a 2-0 lead due to forfeits from Wilmington at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, the Pioneers split the other two doubles matches for a 3-1 lead.
Marietta's
Kelsey Jeffrey (The Plains/Athens) and
Natalie Turner (Marysville/Marysville) defeated Jennifer VanWinkle and Kaitlyn Lentz at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. The Quakers' top doubles team of Marie Granstrom and Jordan VanWinkle picked up an 8-5 win over
Cate Gisser (Westlake/Magnificat) and
Alex Seals (Marysville, Ind./New Washington).
The Pioneers picked up wins at Nos. 2-5 singles. Jeffrey posted a quick 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Jennifer VanWinkle.
Turner,
Lauren Bush (Kent/Theodore Roosevelt) and
Mollee Brown (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) each posted three-set wins at Nos. 2, 4 and 5, respectively.
Wilmington's second team point came at No. 1 singles where Granstrom downed Gisser, 6-1 and 6-0.
