PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Marietta College women's rowing team swept the novice races at the 26th annual Head of the Ohio Regatta on Saturday (Oct.). The Pioneers took the gold medal in both the Novice 8+ and Novice 4+ races and placed third in the Open 8+ race. [

Marietta won the Novice 4+ race with plenty of open water on the competition. The Pioneers finished in 17:21.39 well ahead of Division I Robert Morris (18:04.08) and Xavier (19:18.74).

The Novice 8+ crew was as impressive as the 4+ pulling away from Pittsburgh and Cleveland State for a 44 second victory. The Pioneers notched a time of 17:24.70. Pittsburgh was a distance second at 18:08.78 followed by Cleveland State's 18:27.63.

The Open 8+ came down to the final few meters. Duquesne took the gold in 15:11.78. Dayton edged Marietta at the line by less than a second. Dayton crossed in 15:15.05 and the Pioneers recorded a time of 15:15.97.

The Pioneers' “B” entry in the Open 8+ race finished 18th with a time of 17:06.72. Marietta entered three shells in the Open 4+ field. The Navy Blue finished 8th, 12th and 23rd against mostly Division I competition.
