GENEVA, N.Y. – The Marietta College women's rowing team opened the fall competitive season at the Challenge on the Canal hosted by Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The Pioneers won one of the four races they entered Saturday. [

Marietta's novice eight shell crossed the finish line in 19:02 to take first place. William Smith took second place finishing 58 seconds behind the Pioneers. Clarkson was third and William Smith's “B” shell was fourth.
The varsity eight race was won by William Smith in a time of 17:24. Marietta trailed by 38 seconds in second place. The Rochester Institute of Technology place third and Ithaca was fourth.
In the second varsity eight race, the top two spots again went to William Smith and Marietta, respectively. William Smith crossed the line in 17:56, while the Pioneers finished in a time of 19:07. RIT placed third and William Smith's second entry was fourth.
The last women's race of the day was the varsity fours. The five-boat field included two shells each from Marietta and William Smith. Clarkson completed the field. William Smith took the top two places followed by Marietta's two shells.
The Pioneers return to action at the Head of the Charles on October 23rd in Cambridge, Mass.
