MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College Head Baseball Coach
Brian Brewer announced the hiring of
Cody Castle as its new pitching coach beginning in the 2010-11 season.
"We are very excited to welcome Cody to the MC Baseball Family,” Brewer said. “Cody's resume speaks for itself. He played at a national caliber program in Ashland, coached at Ashland, played professionally, has coached in the collegiate leagues, etc....and has been successful every step of the way. More important is the fact that Cody is a first class human being and one we feel very fortunate to have joining our staff."
Castle, a 2008 graduate of Ashland University, brings a combination of professional playing and collegiate coaching experience to the position.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to join the Marietta Baseball Program,” Castle said. “It is a program that holds high expectations both in the classroom and on the field. I would like to thank Coach Brewer and Coach Deegan in allowing me to continue my coaching career at Marietta College.”
Castle spent the summer of 2010 as the pitching coach for the Elmira Pioneers of the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL). Elmira captured the West Division title with a 27-15 record and finished runner-up in the NYCBL Championship series. The Pioneers finished the regular season with a club-best 2.93 ERA, which ranked third in the 14-team league. They also set new club records for strikeouts, saves and opponents' batting average.
Castle was an assistant pitching coach with his alma mater Ashland University from 2007-09. During his time with the Eagles, the squad made three straight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, highlighted by a trip to the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament in 2008.
Castle began his collegiate playing career with a two-year stint at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. He earned All-Conference honors in both 2002 and 2003 from the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference and left as the school's career leader in wins. Castle then transferred to Ashland where he was a three-year member of the Eagles. He earned All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) first team honors and All-Great Lakes Region second team honors in 2004. The two-year captain also earned Academic All-GLIAC honors and helped lead Ashland to the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament in 2006.
Following the 2006 season, Castle signed a professional contract with the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League. He spent three seasons as the team's closer and earned a trip to the Frontier League All-Star Game in 2008. Castle then joined the Quebec Capitales as a relief specialist and helped the squad win the Canadian-American League title in 2009.
Castle, a native of Dayton, Ohio, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and his K-12 Physical Education License from Ashland.
