Marietta's Jones named best defensive catcher by the ABCA

Senior earns Rawlings Gold Glove Award

APPLETON, Wis. — Marietta College senior #Dan Jones (Lima/Shawnee)# was honored as the best defensive catcher in the nation by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) at Thursday (May 27) night's NCAA Division III Championship banquet. Jones was one of nine individuals to receive a Rawlings NCAA Division III Gold Glove Award.

Jones, a two-time All-OAC selection, earned All-Mideast Region second team recognition for the first time in 2010. He fielded .997 and threw out 13 of 28 attempting to steal a base this spring. The four-year starter also batted .373 (53-for-142) in 43 games, which ranked fourth on the squad this season. Jones, who had a 25-game hit streak during the year, finished with 10 doubles, two home runs, 31 runs scored and 24 RBI.

Under the leadership of seventh-year Head Coach Brian Brewer, four-time NCAA Division III National Champion (1981, 1983, 1986, 2006) Marietta College (36-13, 13-5 OAC) finished as the OAC regular season, OAC Tournament and Mideast Regional Tournament runner-up for a second straight season in 2010.
