Marietta women's crew ends year at weather-shortened ECAC National Invitational Championship

The majority of racing canceled due to high winds

Marietta's Varsity 8+ rowed twice before the ECAC Championship was canceled.
CAMDEN, N.J. — The Marietta College women's crew wrapped up its season Sunday (May 10) at the 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) National Invitational Rowing Championship. The Pioneers Varsity 8+ rowed in a preliminary heat on Saturday (May 9) and semifinal on Sunday before officials canceled the rest of the championship due to extremely high wind conditions. Freshman stroke Kelli Barnette (Parkersburg, W.Va./South) (Parkersburg, W.Va./South), freshman Elizabeth Bratton (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Basil Academy) (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Basil Academy), senior Amanda Chuderewicz (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area), junior Caitlin Piotrowski (Dublin/Dublin Jerome) (Dublin/Dublin Jerome), sophomore Katherine Thomas (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel Area), sophomore Megan Stuhlfauth (Hainsport, N.J./Merion Mercy Academy) (Hainesport, N.J./Merion Mercy Academy), senior Krista Tkacz (Egg Harbor Twp, N.J./) (Egg Harbor Twp, N.J.), sophomore bow Miki Abitante (Columbia, Md./Atholton) (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and junior coxswain Lauren Talasnik (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) combined to place fifth in its opening heat on Saturday after crossing the line in 7:17.980. Trinity won the race with a time of 6:51.070. Holy Cross (7:02.960), Wellesley (7:07.500) and Tufts (7:13.460) finished second through fourth, respectively, while Colby (7:32.720) was sixth.

The Pioneers advanced to the Semi-Final 4 where they finished runner-up with a time of 7:07.319. Skidmore took first place after crossing the line in 7:05.585. Mary Washington (7:10.725) was third, the United States Coast Guard Academy (7:11.072) finished fourth and Hamilton (7:22.718) placed fifth.

Marietta was slated to row in the third-level Final on Sunday afternoon before the event was called off after a long delay, as conditions did not improve.
