AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its 2009 Academic All-OAC Volleyball Teams on Wednesday (Nov. 18) morning, and senior libero
Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted, North Olmsted) represented Marietta College with Academic All-OAC honors. In addition, senior defensive specialist
Katy Williams (Richmond, Ind., Richmond) and sophomore outside hitter
Alex Weissling (Dublin, Dublin Scioto) received Academic All-OAC honorable mention.
The OAC faculty athletic representatives selected the award winners. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 grade point average, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least her second year of participation in the sport.
Holzworth, who earlier this month earned All-OAC honorable mention, solidified herself as one of the all-time great Marietta volleyball players with another stellar season. The four-year letterman finished ranked in the top 10 of the OAC in both service aces and digs in 2009. Holzworth, who set the school's single-season dig record of 666 as a junior, collected 534 digs as a senior, which ranked fourth on the Pioneers' single-season list. Earlier this season, the two-year captain became the school's all-time digs leader and finished with 1,810 for her career, which ranked just outside the OAC's top 10 all-time. In addition, Holzworth posted double-digit digs in 26 of 30 matches. She had a career-high 36 digs at Muskingum and added 32 digs against Baldwin-Wallace, which ranked third and fifth, respectively, in Marietta's record book for a 4-set match. Holzworth also added 44 service aces this year to give her 167 for a career, which placed her fourth all-time. Off the court, the Mathematics major carried a 3.80 grade point average into her seventh semester. Holzworth was also named Academic All-OAC in 2007 and 2008.
Williams, a three-year letterman, once again made a valuable contribution off the bench as a senior in 2009. The defensive specialist averaged 1.92 digs and 0.30 aces in 30 matches. Williams had 4 double-digit dig performances, including a career-best 19 against Muskingum. She also added a career-high 5 service aces against the Fighting Muskies. In the classroom, Williams maintains a 3.42 grade point average as an English Education major.
Weissling had her second straight standout season with the Pioneers in 2009. The 2008 All-OAC honoree battled injury but still averaged 2.79 kills, which ranked second on the squad. Weissling also added 0.48 services aces and 2.48 digs per set this season. She reached double figures in kills in 15 matches and posted 9 double-doubles (kills and digs) on the year. Weissling collected a season-high 18 kills against Capital and 18 digs against Baldwin-Wallace. The two-year letterman holds a 3.49 grade point average as a Finance major with minors in Leadership and Marketing.
Marietta, under the leadership of third-year Head Coach
Ray Costa, finished the 2009 season with an 18-12 record. The Pioneers tied for sixth in the OAC with a 4-5 league record and qualified for the OAC Tournament for the 14th time overall and third in the last 4 years.
