AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference office released its 2009 All-OAC Volleyball Teams and Special Award Winners on Tuesday (Nov. 10) morning, and Marietta College senior libero
Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted, North Olmsted) and freshman outside hitter
Amanda Sawicki (Mentor, Lake Catholic) were both named All-OAC honorable mention. This marked the first time in 9 seasons that the Pioneers had two student-athletes receive recognition from the league for their efforts on the volleyball court.
Holzworth solidified herself as one of the all-time great Marietta volleyball players with another stellar season. The four-year lettermen finished ranked in the top 10 of the OAC in both service aces and digs in 2009. Holzworth, who set the school's single-season dig record of 666 as a junior, collected 534 digs as a senior, which ranked fourth on the Pioneers' single-season list. Earlier this season, the captain became the school's all-time digs leader and finished with 1,810 for her career, which ranked just outside the OAC's top 10 all-time. In addition, she posted double-digit digs in 26 of 30 matches. She had a career-high 36 digs at Muskingum and added 32 digs against Baldwin-Wallace, which ranked third and fifth, respectively, in Marietta's record book for a 4-set match. Holzworth also added 44 service aces this year to give her 167 for a career, which placed her fourth all-time.
Sawicki became the second freshman in as many seasons to earn All-OAC honorable mention in her first year of collegiate volleyball. The outside hitter led Marietta's offense with 304 kills and ranked in the top 10 among all OAC players with her 2.90 dig per set average. Sawicki, who produced double-digit kills in 15 of 30 matches, set a school record with her 32-kill performance against John Carroll. She also contributed to the defense with 25 total blocks in 2009.
Marietta, under the leadership of third-year Head Coach
Ray Costa, finished the 2009 season with an 18-12 record. The Pioneers tied for sixth in the OAC with a 4-5 league record and qualified for the OAC Tournament for the 14th time overall and third in the last 4 years.
