| Cavaliers top visiting Pioneers 2-1 in overtime
Porter scores third goal of the year in loss
Sept. 25, 2007
CANTON, Ohio — The Marietta College men’s soccer team,
returning to action after a nine-day layoff, battled host Walsh
University for 97 minutes Tuesday (Sept. 25) evening. The Cavaliers,
however, were able to escape with a 2-1 overtime victory after Lamar
Skeeter scored the game-winner, his second goal of the
game.
The win improves Walsh’s record to 6-2-1, while Marietta
falls to 4-3-1.
Skeeter gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 advantage in the 26th minute when
he dribbled through the defense, drawing Pioneer keeper Casey
Gray (Marietta) out of the box. Skeeter then finished the
play with a shot into the back right side of the goal.
Marietta’s defense kept the team in the game until the offense
could finally come through on an attack in the 59th minute. Sophomore
Kyle Muth (Twinsburg) sent a cross from the right
side through the box. The pass found the right foot of sophomore
Alan Porter (Marietta), who drove it inside the
left pipe to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained tied at the end of regulation and until the 97th
minute when Skeeter found a seam in the defense and made the most
of it. Skeeter dribbled the ball into the box and sneaked a shot
past Marietta keeper Steve Hagenau (Clearwater,
Fla./Central Catholic) that found its way into the top left corner
of the goal.
Walsh out-shot Marietta 23-11 overall and 10-6 on goal. Gray finished
with four saves, while Hagenau had three. Ben Pflum
made five saves for the Cavaliers.
Marietta is back in action Saturday (Sept. 29) when it opens Ohio
Athletic Conference play at Otterbein. The game is slated for 3
p.m.
