Marietta men drop hard fought battle at Muskingum 76-70
Rockhold pulls down a game-high 17 rebounds in loss

NEW CONCORD, Ohio — The Marietta College men's basketball team traded punch-for-punch with rival Muskingum College Wednesday (Feb. 13) night but lost the final decision, 76-70. The loss drops the Pioneers' record to 6-16 overall and 2-13 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). With the win Muskingum improves to 14-8 overall and 8-7 in the league play.
The Pioneers were led by junior guard Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) with 25 points; Creasap hit 6-of-11 (.545) from behind the arc. Freshman Jordan Cox (West Union) scored 12 points, while senior Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Falls) recorded another double-double with 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds in the loss.
Muskingum was led by Tyler Felt with 20 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Todd scored 12 points and gave out eight assists. Trevor Scott scored 11 points, while Pat Byrne added 10 points.
The Pioneers ran even with the hometown Fighting Muskies for most of the game. Marietta jumped out early, fueled by three Creasap three-pointers, and led 13-4 with 14:03 left in the first half. Muskingum slowly chipped away at the lead for the rest of the half and even took its first lead at 21-18 with 4:36 to play. Marietta would come back to snag a 28-26 lead at the intermission.
Muskingum started the second half on a 10-2 run to lead 36-30 with 15:40 left in the game. The Muskies tried pulling away numerous times but the Pioneers would not go away. Marietta cut the lead to one, 64-63, with 4:11 on the clock but would not gain the lead back, as Muskingum hit its free throws and a couple big shots to secure the 76-70 victory.
For the game, Marietta finished 25-of-58 (.431) from the field, 10-of-25 (.400) from behind the arc and 10-of-19 (.526) from the free throw line. Muskingum finished 25-of-60 (.417) from the field, 8-of-26 (.308) from three and 18-of-26 (.692) from the free throw line. Muskingum held the edge on the boards, 39-37, and in turnovers, committing eight to Marietta's 14.
Marietta will return home Saturday (Feb. 16) afternoon as it plays John Carroll University in the second half of a Winter Weekend doubleheader. Game time is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. and will officially begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game, which will tip-off at 1 p.m. |
