Pioneer men fall to visiting Mount Union 81-65
23 turnovers plague Marietta in OAC loss

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men’s basketball team dropped an 81-65 decision to visiting Mount Union Wednesday (Jan. 16) night. The loss drops Marietta’s record to 4-10 overall and 0-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). With the win, the Purple Raiders improve their record to 5-10 overall and 2-6 in the OAC.

For the game, the Pioneers finished 23-of-62 (.371) from the field, 10-of-28 (.357) from behind the arc and 9-of-14 (.643) from the free throw line. Mount Union finished 29-of-65 (.446) from the field, 3-of-16 (.188) from three and 20-of-29 (.690) from the free throw line. Mount Union out rebounded Marietta 43-42 on the glass and held the edge in turnovers with 13 to Marietta’s 23.

Marietta was led in scoring by junior guard Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) with 18 points. Creasap hit 5-of-9 (.556) from behind the arc. Junior forward Daun Lutes (New Matamoras/Frontier) scored 15 points and collected eight rebounds. Freshman guard Nathan Edick (Westerville/Thomas Worthington) scored 10 points, and senior center Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Falls) also scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a double-double effort.

Leading the way for the Purple Raiders was Chris Switzer with 26 points, shooting 10-of-19 (.526) from the field. Dave Pellerite scored 10 points, collected six rebounds and dished out six assists. Sam King also scored 10 points and collected seven rebounds. Mike Fatigante scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds for Mount Union.

The Pioneers were plagued by turnovers early and often, committing 15 in the first half. The Purple Raiders converted those 15 turnovers into 16 points to help build a 34-24 advantage at intermission. The Pioneers cut the lead down to five in the second half on three different occasions but failed to get any closer to the Purple Raiders, who seemed to hit a big shot every time Marietta got close. Mount Union used those big shots and some key free throws down the stretch to score the 16-point victory on the road.

Marietta is back in action when it visits Baldwin-Wallace on Saturday (Jan. 19). Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
